Thousands of Greek students took to the streets on Thursday as demonstrators marked the anniversary of a student movement which rose up against the military junta.

The date, 17 November, marked 38 years since the uprising in 1973 which led to the fall of the dictatorship and the "Metapolitefsi" era.

The demonstration on Thursday was against a backdrop of unemployment, painful negotiations and financial gloom in Greece, which is perceived by many to be on the brink of collapse.
