A woman who murdered her grandmother in a "frenzied" and "cold-blooded" attack after plundering her savings account has been jailed for life.

Sheila Jones, 36, from Norton Canes, Cannock, was told she must serve a minimum term of 22 years and six months after admitting the killing of 92-year-old Daisy Myring.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that Jones stole around £7,000 from the pensioner, killing her to silence her when she became suspicious.

The great-grandmother died on May 31 this year at her home in the Brownhills area of the West Midlands.

She was found lying badly beaten and calling for help on the floor of the bedroom by a carer.

The court heard she had suffered a number of blows to the head, and extensive bruising to her face and upper body, including two black eyes, a fractured collar bone and a dislocated shoulder joint. She was pronounced dead in hospital hours after she was found.

Prosecutor Gareth Walters told the court that over a course of eight months last year Jones withdrew £6,800 from her grandmother's account in 14 separate transactions.

Mrs Myring had voiced concerns about Jones and her building society account to her carers and other family members, and was due to visit the building society on the day of her death. Mr Walters told the court she was "distraught" about the missing money, and had sobbed to a carer about it.

He said Jones had been intending to smother her grandmother during the night to prevent the theft coming to light. She was "hoping to put it down to Daisy's poor heart", he said.

Speaking after the sentencing, on behalf of the family, Mrs Myring's grandson David Worrall said: "We are delighted with the outcome at court today, that Sheila Jones has pleaded guilty to the senseless murder of my grandmother, Daisy Myring. The last few months have been a nightmare for me and all other members of our family."

There is a big difference between revenge and justice. If someone were to harm a loved one my instinct might be to kill them but that doesn't mean that would be the right response. We live in societies with rules to make them work. If we look at the historical use of capital punishment and its use in some countries today, we can see that it isn't a deterrent. Ideas of appropriate punishments vary tremendously from one country to another.
Unfortunately no justice system is perfect. DNA is not the precise tool that many believe and can be contaminated.
There is no way to release someone wrongly executed. Whenever there is an emotive case such as this one there are always those who say bring back hanging but it wouldn't stop such cases occurring.
I think that sentences for murderers like this woman should be very long, and every day she should suffer remembering what she has done. May every day of her life be a miserable one.
I also think that trying to understand why anyone has done is important. What this woman did was dreadful but what makes someone kill their own grandmother? She'd been stealing from the poor old lady but what made her so desperate that she took from her grandmother? I obviously don't sympathise with her at all but we need to try to find out what makes someone so desperate so we can try to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

Although l always believe that the causes are important, particularly in relation when children or young people commit crimes, and in many cases growing up in dysfuncional homes, where there is often abuse, with so called " parents" who couldn`t give a s- -t about their children, society or themselves, l feel that in this case this woman was not a youngster, and this was a premedicated act.
She withdrew this money, a bit at a time, and it was only when her grandmother became suspicious that she killed her. Nobody in this country who has a roof over their heads and money coming in every week, even if it is only JSA can claim to be so desperate that they steal money from an old lady, it is a despicable act, in the uk, compared to a country like Brazil or Thailand, where, if you don`t work you don`t eat, we are well off, but the uk has got very materialstic and they always want more!
What makes someone kill their own grandmother? Well in this case it was because she thought she would be found out,and she was scared of that, if she hadn`t killed her she would have been, only then she would have been serving a prison sentence for theft (or if she was lucky, a lesser sentence) wheras now she is serving a sentence for murder.

minimum of 22 years they missed a 2 of that should be 222 years like they give them in america, or she is a prime candidate for capital punishment.

I just don't get it at all. This woman gets 22 years for killing her grandma and some other guy get 6 odd years for killing someone else, 22 - 6 for the same thing, big difference, why?
04:56 on 22/11/2011
Now I understand why there should be mercy killing!! Not for the pooor granny but for that ugly monters of a grand daughter. Some one should offer to put her down for free, after all, it could be looed upon as doing a public service. I have said for many years that the worst breed of animals on our planet are humans and I am more and more convinced of this each day.

In the absence of the death penalty this creature will serve 22 years in prison; How does a judge arrive at this figure and whilst we are told that in fact this is the minimum figure in reality very, very few murderers actually serve more than the minimum.

For those in favour of abolition of the death penalty and use the argument of the innocent person being put to death, I think you would find that if we were to be provided with the true figures many more innocent people have died violently since the abolition but every effort is made to reduce offence to one of manslaughter or less.

I agree, the law is far too soft. Bad thing like this happen because people know they can get away with it. What a sad country we live in when we can't even punish our criminals properly.

Look at the US where most states have the death penalty; horrible, despicable, violent crimes like this still occur. The death penalty is not a deterrent. People commit crimres like this because they believe they will never get caught, not because if they do they will not be put to death..

R.I.P Daisy, I hope you find peace. This is so sad, I treated my grandparents so well. Just goes to show how evil some people are :(

I see all this ridiculous talk about "bringing back hanging" on here and frankly I wonder what planet you people are from.

The reason the Death Penalty was abolished was it was judged the cause of enough wrongful deaths as to be a social and judicial evil.

Go take a look at the DP in the United States, where if you are poor you are several times more likely to be executed because you can't afford a decent lawyer. It is justice for sale.

But more fundamentally, what could possibly be more disgusting and barbaric than the calm, collected decision to sit down and vote on whether a person should carry on living? However much one tries to argue against it, we all know that voting someone into a grave is hideous, medieval, and outside the confines of a civilised world. You're not "punishing" someone, you're killing them.

We should be rightly proud in Britain that we think that to kill a murderer makes us no better than them. Call it "execution", "judicial response", "the full penalty of the law", whatever: it's killing a human being.

What separates us from the animal kingdom is very little, but one of the landmark features of being a human being is knowing that to take a life is a horror worse than any other.

Until it happens to someone you love and know , sorry Dave but spouting off about fundaments when you have child killers and murders in your midst doesnt really tug at any strings with me of course when its cases of there might be someone else then you dont assign the DP ,but for obvious cases of murder why not you live by the sword you die by the sword , its because of people like you that think people can be rehabilitated after cases of murder and set free back into society how about the Bulger case where is Venables now back in prison for more offences concerning children , how many killers do we have too have walking our streets before you realise that this can't continue .

I totally agree! And the reason it was abolished was because certain people worried that people were being wrongly found guilty, only to be cleared after execution, but that would not be the case nowadays, with strong DNA evidence etc. It makes me sick to think that there's child murderers and molesters still roaming the streets simply because they got out of jail on grounds of good behaviour.... the only reason they behaved was so they could hurry up and get out and do it again. I know of at least 2 cases in my area where paedophiles were let off scott free (they hadn't murdered, but who knows what they are capable of next?). The sentence for them was to attend councilling...amazing. We are too soft in this country. The law needs to change from the bottom up, especially for anyone that messes with children or the elderly, murderers and rapists. Sorry for the rant but I am in total agreement with you!

Hmmmm wot does the sign 'Do not resusitate' means in hospitals then?. Who's playing God there then? Is there a difference?
01:13 on 22/11/2011
You're seriously asking if there's a difference between the decision a patient makes to die of natural causes in a hospital and the snapping of someone's neck in Belmarsh prison?

If I break your neck I am ending your life. If you ask not to be unduly forced to live you are dying of natural causes. Is that clear enough a difference?
02:04 on 22/11/2011
I'm with you on your arguement...Just wanted to know how David feels on abortion as well. And if he is a vegetarian.

Yah see if my dog killed someone she would be injected and "put down" and i agree with it totally (she is a toy yorkie with a big mouth lol) so would you agree that a dog killing a child/adult should be put too sleep after all its another type of animal and what are we same thing walking around on 2 legs but a more complex brain system, or do you think with a bit of councilling and gentle talking too (a bit of one - one) she will be a productive member of society ,nope put her too sleep same thing should apply too all killers who are definatley guilty without doubt .
22:59 on 21/11/2011
Life means 22 years .... oh yes and 6 months. What a nonsense. This was premeditated and utterly callous, life should be just that, life. We should take some lead from the US system where many murderers are sentenced to life "without the possibility of parole".

Personally I would agree with the death sentence for some murders; those which are premeditated and proof is beyond question. Let's face it, what use is this woman alive? She is another drain on the public purse and, if she is ever freed, will probably contribute nothing to society whatsoever (if the last 36 years are anything to go by).

And the those with the stupid and emotive strap line "state sponsored murder", the state is there to defend and reflect the law bidding majority and should be allowed to do so as is necessary depending on each situation. "Murder" is defined as "The unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another" so there you have it, it is not unlawful and is not one human being on another. So try to find emotive language that is literary correct.

what a complete waste of air. People like that just exist, they have'nt got meaningful lives or any hope of a fullfilling future. Sad really when life can be rewarding if you make the choices.
22:51 on 21/11/2011
You are 100% correct Peter 45. If ever there was just cause to bring back the death penalty then this is it.
22:46 on 21/11/2011
Poor old lady. I am sickened by what she endured at the hands of her evil grand-daughter - all in the name of financial gain. She should have been given a life sentence for what she did. RIP Daisy Myring.
