SNP Given £1m Boost From Lottery Winners

Snp Lottery Money

A couple who scooped a £161 million lottery jackpot have handed the Scottish National Party a record £1 million cash boost as it prepares for an independence referendum.

Chris and Colin Weir insisted that the donation - the largest ever in the SNP's history - was about "more than party politics".

The couple, from Largs, Ayrshire, became Europe's biggest lottery winners in July, when they won the £161 million EuroMillions jackpot. And they have already used some of their winnings to support local causes.

Mrs Weir said: "We have been supporters of the SNP for a long time but this is about more than party politics.

"Every society, every country should have the right and the opportunity to determine its own path. That's something I've believed in strongly for a long time. We want to give the people of Scotland a fair chance in the referendum campaign that's why we are supporting the SNP now and into the independence referendum.

"The only people with the right to decide Scotland's future are the people of Scotland themselves and we want to support the SNP and the referendum campaign in helping Scotland make that decision fairly."

The SNP has pledged to hold an independence referendum in the second half of the current Scottish Parliamentary term.

And Mr Weir said: "It's no secret I support the SNP and stood for the party. I backed the party in the 1978 referendum and the behaviour of the UK parties convinced me that we should support this referendum properly." The SNP, he added, had "done a good job in government and is doing a good job for Scotland".

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond welcomed the donation, saying: "The Weirs have experienced great good fortune and they have already shown their generosity with their support for the Waverley Paddle Steamer and causes in their community.

"They have had a long-standing commitment to the SNP and their welcome donation will allow the party to continue its work and to prepare for the referendum campaign ahead."

Scotland subsidises the rest of the UK. Fact.

"Government and Expenditure Revenue Scotland 2009-10 figures show that, including a geographical share of UK North Sea oil and gas revenues, Scotland contributed 9.4 per cent of UK public sector revenue and received 9.3 per cent of total UK public sector expenditure, including a per capita share of UK debt interest payments."

"Despite the fall in North Sea revenues to £6.5 billion in 2009-10 - less than half the level for this year - Scotland still contributed far more to the UK exchequer than our share of population, which underlines the breadth and strength of Scotland's finances, and the opportunities of financial responsibility and independence. Scotland generated 9.4 per cent of UK tax with 8.4 per cent of the population - the equivalent of £1,000 extra for every man, woman and child in Scotland."

The naked hatred shown here by some English commentors can only be the result of having their sense of smug superiority challenged. We provide for ourselves and for *you*. Learn the facts and show some respect.

You carry on reading you Scottish based website 'statistics' and you carry on believing them if you want. Scotland provide - it takes it all back and then some, in healthcare! but rest assured there is more 'naked hatred' being shown here by those north of the border - 'We provide for ourselves and for *you*'- No you don't. Providing and subsidising is when we need it and can't survive without it. Learn 'your' facts - no thanks - will stick to independent figures and not those published for agenda reasons and believed by those who are content to be spoonfed. As for showing respect??? Why? Because yet again you are on here posting your sanctimonious tat and we are all to fall at your feet with humble inferiority to your vastly superior rantings. Tell you what why not just step back from the keyboard and give it a rest.

"You carry on reading you Scottish based website 'statistics'"

Care to try to prove that they're wrong?

"you carry on believing them if you want."

Facts are facts, no belief necessary.

"Scotland provide - it takes it all back and then some, in healthcare!"

Evidence?

"but rest assured there is more 'naked hatred' being shown here by those north of the border "

No there's not.

"'We provide for ourselves and for *you*'- No you don't."

Yes we do and the facts support it.

"Providing and subsidising is when we need it and can't survive without it. "

No it's not.

"Learn 'your' facts - no thanks - will stick to independent figures and not those published for agenda reasons "

Yet you provide none. Why is that?

"As for showing respect??? Why?"

I'd have thought it would be obvious, golden rule and all that but a petty, small-minded person like you wouldn't understand that. My apologies for over-estimating you.

"Because yet again you are on here posting your sanctimonious tat and we are all to fall at your feet with humble inferiority to your vastly superior rantings. Tell you what why not just step back from the keyboard and give it a rest."

Facts are facts and I'll continue to post them as long people continue to spout venomous, indefensible untruths.

If your political leaders wanted that, it would be happening now. None of them do, for the simple reason that they know the truth of the subsidies flowing south.

Our political leaders of the last 20 odd years were those gracious gruesome twosome, the MULTI millionare BLIAR and his handwringing sidekick Brown and lets not leave out Dear Darling. All Scottish and yes all knew how important it was re subsidies to keep Scotland but it is exactly the opposite to what you claim. Now we actually have some leaders not from north of the border, I suspect they are as we type looking at ways of cutting you loose!

You'd lose all that subsidy, that's why your political masters wont even contemplate it.

Too much hatred, I think it is best we all split. Scots hate us so I am cancelling my holiday to the highlands. :) Life is too short and from the comments I have read I find it all a bit sad.
My lottery numbers are giving me good vibes and when I win ...well who knows who I will give it too.

I lived in Scotland for ten years, Aberdeenshire, suffered no abuse from the majority but like back home the ignorant and those who've never ventured further than their little communities are racist, not just against the English, but everyone, including some of their own depending which football team or religion they support.

Be English and proud, we have a great history and a great future. We always win through adversity and we always stay at the top, maybe not as high as we used to be, but we still show the World! We are unfortunately part of an archapeligo island system which has been nothing but a thorn in our side for years, but we forgive and forget and move on! We still forgive and forget. Its about time we went on our own again and became "England" as an economy and sovereign state. We showed the world how to operate a single currency between nations, the sterling is still existing, where the Euro has collapsed, virtually. We showed them how to help failing nations when there economic problems couldnt be worked out. We have a history of unionism and single currency far longer than any other nation, and i am proud of that but its about time we put up or shut up and stood tall together or fall as nothing! good night

Oh skylighter I pity you, sweet dreams because that is where you belong in dream land. You have shown that you know nothing about history and play fast and loose with it.

All of the little Englanders (and let me get this straight I do not hate the English, I am just pro Scotland) on here beleive what you want to believe from your oh so biased press and it stirs you up to believe financial nonsense. Which then allows you to come on here degrading the Scots, because you know all 5.3 million of us. We owe you nothing we are not subsidised and independent analysis of the facts prove this. Now just get over it. The fact that a Scottish person is in the news for donating some of his wealth to a cause that he passionately believes in has caused so much bitternes to come forward says more about those who spout that bitterness. Good night sweet dreams

Parliament has demonstrated to us that just about all UK politicians are thieving lying fraudsters who exist only to work out the many ways money is extracted out or our wages and into their bank accounts.
No disrespect to this couple, what the do with their money is their business, but there are better ways of making a political statement than trusting politicians.

That would be the Westminster parliament you're talking about then. Holyrood had had a remarkably small amount of scandal despite being run by a LibLab coalition for the first 8 years.
07:24 PM on 11/21/2011
There may be a few old timers with deep principles of honour and honesty, I do not doubt that, but they are a fast dying breed. These days no politician goes in it for the good of the people, just himself.

If that were not the case right now we British would have a land to be proud of.
07:48 PM on 11/21/2011
Don't you think that 8 years is a bit short a time to be viewing a non-scandalous government. Remember, you gave back Colonel Gaddaffi's beloved hijacker, which was scandalous! For what reason, eh!!! trade perhaps, some Libyan gold, buying scottish rainwater or the goodness of your hearts! I think it was the goodness of your heart. You just use Parliament to run your scandals thru instead and again keep Holyrood squeaky clean!!!! just a thought!

They chose something they believe in to invest in. I don't know, and neither do you, what other causes they may have donated equally generous amounts to.

It is not up to you to let us go how arrogant and typical, Scotland will go at its own time and choosing, unfortunately the Scottish people were never given an option of joining or not in the first place, and the evidence shows that the Union was hard on the ordinary Scottish person. Things only really started picking up during the Empire building years which again evidence shows that per head of population Scotland contributed more.

"The only people with the right to decide Scotland's future are the people of Scotland themselves and we want to support the SNP and the referendum campaign in helping Scotland make that decision fairly."

By donating £1000000 to the SNP, they are helping a fair decision. If they wanted a fair decision, why not donate the million to all elected parties and independents from last election, but share it pro-rata based upon MSPs?

They do have something obvious in common with auld King Fishface o` Calton hill :)

You may not have thought this through. In Scotland we have 4 mainstream political parties. One (SNP) aims to end the union. The other 3 (Lib Lab Con .. currently a unionist minority in Holyrood btw) are desperate to keep Scotland and its resources thirled to the outmoded and corrupt UK. These folk are donating their money to the only party whose aims they agree with. If you had a wad of cash like that, would you give some of it to people whose stated aim is contrary to your own?
04:18 PM on 11/21/2011
Nice, the Scots try for a refurendum, we cannot even get one on the EU.
I wonder though, if the Scots go independant, will they get loads of English asylum seekers looking to escape the third world England has become?

Yep.. think of the possibilities. All our resources to spend on things we want rather than things London wants. No more nukes, no more wars, no more unfettered financial sector. Lots of English people of all colours will be itching to suddenly move north.
