Immigration: Net Migration Hits Record High Of 252,000

The government's immigration policy has come under attack as statistics revealed net migration hit a record high of 252,000 in 2010.

In 2009 net migration to the UK was 198,000.

The figures from the Office for National Statistics come in the wake of the government's pledge to reduce migration to the "tens of thousands".

Last month David Cameron launched a crackdown, urging the public to report people suspected of being illegal immigrants.

The prime minister blamed the last government's points-based system for failing to stem recent rises in net migration, and said the coalition's changes to the system will lead to fewer unskilled people entering the UK.

Jonathan Portes, director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research and former chief economist at the Cabinet Office, aid that the figures highlighted that the government's "absurd" and "misguided' immigration policy.

"It's based on bad economics. They are trying to restrict net immigration primarily through restricting skilled migrants from outside the EU, and students."

Portes told Huff Post UK while it was important to control immigration, current policy was "effectively targeting a reduction in British exports. Why on earth would you do that?"

Matt Cavanagh, Associate Director at IPPR, agreed it was a mistake for the government to target net immigration.

"The figures confirm that net immigration in 2010 was the highest on record. Not because immigration is rising - as the ONS make clear, it has been stable since 2004 - but because emigration is falling.

The government cannot control emigration - just like it cannot control immigration from the EU - so it ends up trying to clamp down even harder on those areas of immigration it can control. But these are the areas most valuable to our economy, like overseas students and skilled workers from outside the EU."

But Immigration Minister Damian Green said the figures contained early signs "that our policies are starting to take effect".

"Latest quarterly figures show a decrease in the number of student and work visas issued compared to a year earlier..

"The latest net migration figures are also encouraging, showing a fall since the recent peak in September 2010, but we are clear there is much more to be done.

"That's why I will be announcing reforms to settlement and the family route which will help bring net migration down from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands over the course of this Parliament."

A drop the number of people leaving the country to a 10-year-low, led to the rise. Figures for the year ending in March 2011 show the number of people leaving the UK for work is at a five year low at 174,000.

Almost a quarter of a million people who came to Britain last year were students.

Can't understand what problems falling numbers of immigrants would solve...
For example, can someone clarify please what the causal links (mechanisms) between reduced immigration and youth unemployment are?
Why to reduce the numbers of foreign students in UK universities? They are the ones who pay highest tuition fees to subsidize 'home' students... Why to reduce non-EU migrants (those on working visas)? They are the ones who are most economically profitable for the government - no entitlement to state benefits, only entitlement to pay taxes and Home Office visa application fees...
The last question, how much changing immigration rules cost the UK taxpayer?
15:41 on 25/11/2011
SOME of the REAL students pay a great deal. Many still get on course paid for by the tax payer. Bogus students are a problem.
20:50 on 25/11/2011
Do you assume that all tax payers are British nationals in this country? Clarify.

We need to stop benefits to persons who have not been in this country for 15 years and to drug users and alcholics, Anyone not employed to still do 30 hours a week community work which they get minimum wage for. Stop housing benefit over 600 pounds a month if you can't manage or work move to a cheaper area. Stop NHS free treatment unless you or your parents have been in the UK for 15 years and paid National insurance. We need to support small businesses to start exporting goods we make not importing from China and cut VAT to get tourism back to help the country areas.

These UK Immigration issues have been going on for years whether its labour or conservative it doesn't matter, neither party has the stomach to tackle this cash and culturally sap sucking issue - it will go on and on no matter how much winging we do - Europe has the UK in its back pocket and the immigration issue is an example of it. The UK has to redefine its core values in terms of what it stands for and get after it - the only problem is the UK political parties are to stupid to realise how intelligent they could really be...Enoch Powell was right to a degree the only difference its all immigration black, white, yellow, pink and its come from Europe...where has all the strong leadership gone - I wasn't an advocate of Thatcher but like her or lump her she made more progress than any leader that i know in my time.

20:22 on 24/11/2011
I think you mean immigration, 'emigration' is when people are leaving the country. Thankfully UKIP will never come to power.

Social structure of UK becoming weaker because government have too many AGENDA to deal with so only way to tackle it, pay attention to jobs and foreign policy such as war? War never been UK cause but few wanted to go for it in name of pride? Pride in what? Yes they coming to harm us so we go and stop them coming? Game after game was planned by government in US and UK so it got out of hand and economy become lowest priority for all government members.

This is where EU took over the job market and Asia took over western markets so you win some you loose some like one of the China official told US official that we do not govern the world and we do not send our troops for other people fight when we have nothing to do in their war? Yes there was total silent.

Now UK economy looking way out but whole of the EU have went down under many EU countries need many time more bail out and cash is running out so within riots and trouble ahead in EU they do not want UK export or import right now so bank have down graded value of UK pound and it investment for some time to come so UK would suffer if EU do not recovers from recession they are facing so double deep could be worse for UK if EU face that.

The immigration policy of this country since Tony Blairs day has been 1) allow as many people in as possible to effect a change in the population which will help the EU break England up into tiny segments once our politicians have surrendered the final vestiges of power. 2) To ensure that business can pay the lowest possible wages while pretending that ALL immigrants are more skilled than the domestic population. Therebye returning the status of the workforce to that which existed in Victorian and pre Victorian Britain. Now do you get it?
19:53 on 24/11/2011
Yes it is well said UK populaion for past 20 years never been train or did they get support. It is like once you were made redundant, there is no back up you search for a job, job walks away to immigrant who have high qualification and willing to work longer hours without pay and no security except do as you told so all happy. People can never get jobs after they rich 50 and it is no go area and training is only for under 35 so if you were made jobless and company shut down when you are 35 to 40, one had to re-train and it is none existent so you are work shy and useless so your kids become worthless and crime takes over then society says Brits? Hold on a dam minute all was fine when there was a job but it is hardly a person fault if there is no jobs without further training and support so employers takes on those from EU and none EU workers so where dam Brits go except join long dole line every walks of life they face trouble and how can you blame them?
21:05 on 24/11/2011
The people you describe are NOT well qualified. they might have a certificate from somewhere in Nigeria or Pakistan or the old Soviet Union countries. but thats not the same as British qualifications. Would you trust someone who "trained" in a Romanian orphanage?
20:57 on 24/11/2011
You are so very right. Bring in the people who wont join unions and can be forced to work in dangerous conditions for less than minimum wages. Screw the British workers as long as the rich minority are ok. The irony is that the unions supported this.

In my town where I live it is full of immigrants, there are whole familys, also many young men just walking around in groups, also a lot of gipsy looking people,
19:50 on 24/11/2011
I lived in 3 countries, seen Gyppo's in all 3 of them.
00:23 on 25/11/2011
What's wrong with that? How do you define immigrants? Probably as people with different skin colour...
15:46 on 25/11/2011
Immigrants are people who come to live in the UK from outside the UK. Stop trying to stir up racism. Whats wrong with it is the country is full.

These figures are very badly presented. Almost a quatrer a million people coming were students (temporary, paying a lot of money into the economy)
Net emigrants, 178,000
Therefore, other immigrants, around the same number as emigrants.
No information on UK nationals returning from abroad (classed as immigrants, like my brother was, as with wife and children) or taxpayers from other nationalities returning home, such as Poles leaving here to go home, having made a buck.

So as a general realistic assessment, nothing happened except we got a lot of students coming here paying overseas rates for their degree courses. Stop that happening and the University of Surrey heareth the sound of flushing waters as they talk to god on the great white telephone.

Absolute rubbish
19:32 on 24/11/2011
Nice to know that figures are rubbish. So if the taxman demands a huge figure from you, it'll just be rubbish, pay it.
18:49 on 24/11/2011
And a lot of these so called students just come here to work, NOT STUDY, and tax free at that.

Wakey, Wakey
19:34 on 24/11/2011
Tell that to the University of Surrey. Whatever else they do when they come here, they pay fees and rants. I am aware that giving you bigots information makes no difference, you know you are right and no mere facts will make any difference.

I know many hundreds of student who only have come for work and bogus student visa issue by bogus colleges and other private sectors in UK have flood the student and it is all mafia gang start to finish where bogus firms offering jobs to only foreign student who were arrange from theirs native land to work here in UK so visa to work here is not possible so come as a student and take over foreign companies jobs, which are only for foreign workers so look around you and pay visit some of the places and you would find it clear as water.
Yes walk down in town and cities there are immigrants in groups and they all on benefit so come here, get house a private house nice place, benefits and school for kids then train for work programme for them so native UK population once you are over 16 and no place to live, you are on the street and gang takes over your life so you are slave in sex industries so the female and if you are without babies, no place to live so yes look around you would find this every where. No offence to anyone but truth is here for everyone to see it.

has david cameron seen any old western films when everybody found out about the gold in the hills they travelled thousands of miles to get there and soldiers were sent to protect them from the natives . well its been happening here for years and its ongoing , everyone has heard about the free everything and they are traveling thousands of miles to get here and we have our own type of soldiers protecting them they go under the name of human rights , so cameron needs to know as long as we are governed by these human rights he has no chance of stopping the stampede , the people coming here would rather die than not get here ..........................

So much for his election pledges...all lies!! The only thing he hasn't reneged on is his pledge to cut benefits and services for poor people. ..I notice he has done NOTHING to rein in the banks and the huge fat-cat boardroom salaries, that contribute to his party funding.
