Jimmy Carr Defends Controversial Sunshine Joke - 'Anything Is Up For Grabs'

Jimmy Carr: 'Disability Jokes Are Up For Grabs'

Jimmy Carr has insisted there are no taboo areas in comedy and any subject is "up for grabs".

Carr, who has got into trouble in the past with his near-the-knuckle routine, was criticised earlier this week for a joke about handicapped children and the Variety Club's Sunshine minibuses.

But he told Absolute Radio's Christian O'Connell's breakfast show that "some people just like being offended".

He said: "You go, well, you can't joke about race. Well, if you're from a different race and that's your experience of the world and you want to talk about that, then fine.

"Or you can't talk about disability, but disabled comics can talk about that. Well, OK... I think anyone can talk about anything, anything's kind of up for grabs."

Carr, who has just completed a UK tour, said it was "a brilliant time" to be a comedian.

He said: "But people are allowed to be offended as well. It's fine to be offended. Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right. Just because you're the comedian doesn't mean you're right."

Carr is not the only comic to talk himself into trouble in recent weeks. Ricky Gervais admitted he was "naive" last month after he caused a storm by using the word "mong" on Twitter.

The Office star said he had not realised the word was used to insult disabled people.
