Police are hunting a knife-wielding would-be jewellery thief after he was fended off by a shop owner brandishing a broom handle.

CCTV footage released by the Metropolitan Police on Friday shows the well-built attacker loitering in the doorway of the London shop, before grabbing an unsuspecting female worker round the throat.

After releasing her he set his sights on the male shop owner. Following a tense stand-off in the doorway the thief advanced, slashing the knife through the air in the owner's direction.

But he is chased off after the woman hands the shop owner a broom to use as a weapon.

The incident happened on Friday 21 October at 11.15pm in Harrolds Discount Jewellers along Dagenham Heathway.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Corner, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was a violent attack which left the shop workers extremely shaken."

"They acted with great courage to fight off the suspect and were lucky to have avoided being seriously injured. We need help from the public to trace this individual before he attempts to target someone else."

A long stick is the perfect weapon against a knife. It has reach. A knife is an up close weapon. In America shopkeepers have a handgun under the counter. In the UK shopkeepers should keep a long stick under the counter. If I were that man behind the counter I would be giving that woman a huge reward for her quick thinking. On reflection, I'm glad I live in the UK. Flying bullets don't care who or what they hit. A broom handle was an extension of this man's body and he used it to great effect.

Some might call the shopkeeper silly to have defended himself, some would think that defending yourself is a good idea.
Darwin awards may be handed out here.

Actually, he defended the woman... and rushed to her aid.

We should be like America, the The right to bear Arms would put a stop to this. These kind of knife- wielding thugs would think twice berfore doing anything like this if they thought we could defend ourselves.

And you'd have thugs roaming the streets with guns. A man was shot and is now in critical condition after being robbed at gunpoint for the Christmas presents he had just purchased. Yeah, America, it's just peachy. And yes, I am American.... sigh

Geez... in America the "jewelry thieves" walk in with a handgun pointed at your face.

Some people will call the shopkeeper a brave man,
i call him an odiot.
A broom handle against a knife, had the robber been a
little faster on his feet, the shopkeeper may well have not
been alive today.
We had this scenario here last week in the UK,
4 police injured by a single knife man, no offence meant,
just hard fact,s.
Yes the shopkeeper was lucky, no matter, your point of view.

I don't think you can call the guy an 'odiot' I don't even know what it means, is it a Chinese expression?

I wish i was as perfect as you.
I can assume you never make an error,
Narrow minded person.

Bullies, who think they can intimidate by flashing a knife, often have no experience using the weapon. This fat thug was thrown off by the shopkeepers sturdy stance initially... then the shopkeeper got in a wicked lick with the rod.

Good for the shop owner and assistant!

With all the CCTV, I hope the thief is caught quickly...and I hope he actually gets a custodial sentence (or is that just another urban legend?)  Maybe he could do a noncustodial sentence next door to the judge for say 5 years?

Question to the UK posters:  I read the UK boards, and there used to be a lot of gangs on motorbikes/scooters hitting the high-end stores in smash-and-grabs (with very few of them caught as I recall.  That seems to have stopped for some reason.  Am I just missing them, or did law enforcement find a way to combat these?

I don't think there were ever "lots of gangs", the media especially the Daily Mail likes to give the impression that Britain is a den of iniquity, in fact in most nations these incidents wouldn't warrant nationwide front page coverage.

Deluk, I should have used a different term; there seemed to be a spate of them suddenly which then stopped. I live in the US; we see flashmobs all the time in the bigger cities.  (You have to go to youtube to see the CCTV video, US media doesn't carry it.)

The Daily Mail seems to be the `thinking`(??!) person`s equivalent of the Sunday Sport. Ridiculous stories with no substance.

Love this old man!

In the US, the shop owner would have had the right - and probably the means - to have shot this pr*ck dead!

In the USA the pr*ck would have had a gun too, someone would have ended up dead.
06:17 AM on 11/26/2011
Yeah, but had this happened in the U.S., the thug probably would have been wielding a gun. not a knife so the entire scenario would be different...
