Natural history presenter Sir David Attenborough has been named Britain's greatest living national treasure - beating Stephen Fry and Sir Paul McCartney in the poll.

The veteran broadcaster, 85, also triumphed over physicist Professor Stephen Hawking and Harry Potter author JK Rowling to win the title.

Broadcaster and wit Fry was second, followed by former 007 star Sir Sean Connery, and ex-Beatle Sir Paul.

Prof Hawking was fifth, followed by World Cup winning footballer Sir Bobby Charlton, author Rowling, actress Dame Judi Dench, Welsh crooner Sir Tom Jones and Gandhi film director Lord Richard Attenborough, the brother of Sir David.

More than 4,000 people were asked to select Britain's national treasure from a shortlist, in a survey to celebrate the EuroMillions Millionaires Month.

People were asked to vote for the greatest "national living treasure", who they would like to see on a £1 million note. Sir David's image will now feature on the note, which will not be for circulation.

Meanwhile, Sir Sean Connery was named Scotland's "greatest living national treasure". The actor beat off competition from the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Billy Connolly and Sir Chris Hoy to come top of the survey.

Sir David deserves all the respect and awards going.. his series over the years have been thought-provoking, educational and above all, showing us all how the effects of humans has had, is having and will continue to have on the world.

His clarion calls for conservation and the effects of deforestation attest to his decades-long fight for the natural world, and that world will be a poorer place when he's gon.

What a shame, then, that several countries - in particular the US & Canada - have decided not to buy the 7th and final episode of 'Frozen Planet' - the episode entitled 'On Thin Ice'.. dealing with the ongoing and accelerating effects of climate change.

Surely the TV audiences in these countries, who up until now have devoured every BBC natural history series headed by Sir David, can make up their own minds on whether this globally respected man's opinions and findings are sound, without the networks positively discriminating, and electing not to let their audiences see this programme?

I'm aware of the virilent opposition to the very idea of climate change abroad in North America, which inconveniently is the source of much of the problem, but I would have thought that, in what must be one of the most democratic continents in the world, that a programme by Sir David Attenborough is deliberately ignored?
After all, the deniers and nay-sayers can always change channels, or am I being altogether too sensible?

Who in their right mind would argue with that? Sir David has done more for the expansion of the general public's understanding of the natural world as any single Tv presenter, and he really is the voice of BBC natural history documentaries. He really was the only man to beat Stephen Fry to the top spot. :)

I wouldn't argue with that.
The Frozen Planet is the most amazing nature series I've ever seen.
Mind you, I suppose that is due more to the cameraman than to Attenborough.

Sorry if above is thought to be misleading but the headline I was refering to was that which appears on the front page of the ' Huffington' , which reads,"Attenborough trumps Potter for national treasure title."

This headline typifies the press. It is no coincidence a headline like this trying to undermine Ms Rowling the day after she gave evidence in the Leveson inquiry!

Wot !? Are you suggesting the noble Huff might be disseminating socio political propaganda ?
Whatever next ! lol
Yeah I think you got the wrong end of the stick, no worries.
Luvvies one and all, but apart from massaging a few egos really quite pointless..........
