Grant Shapps, Cheryl Gillan, Simon Burns, Ed Balls And Ed Miliband: Who Had A Good Week And Who Had A Shocker?

Zombies, Tears And Tantrums: Who Had A Good Week And Who Had A Shocker?

They say a week is a long time in politics, so we thought we'd help remind you who had a good one and who had a shocker.

First up housing minister Grant Shapps, whose three minute meltdown on the Today programme about whether or not he'd pulled out of an interview about some disappointing stats was a masterclass in political miscommunication.

Also having a bad week, Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan, who became the bookies favourite to be the to leave the Cabinet.

Another Tory in trouble was health minister Simon Burns, who labelled 38 degrees members "Zombie-like" for emailing their concerns about the NHS bill to MPs - prompting the organisation's executive director David Babbs to blog an angry repost on the Huffington Post.

38 Degrees members believe that contacting our MPs and telling them what we think is what living in a democracy is all about. It's not only for certain sorts of people, from one or other end of the political spectrum. It's for all of us.

But it wasn't just tears and on-air tantrums, some politicians had a great week. Ed Miliband's "squeezed middle" catchphrase was named word of the year for 2011 – beating Arab Spring, hacktivism and podcasting.

His brother David also won an award for social media use.

And the SNP won the (political) lottery with a £1m donation from a couple who had won £161m.

Finally there were the unions - who we're not sure about either way. After being criticised for potentially costing the UK £500m with their strike and the news that the equivalent of 2,840 full time public sector staff work for trade unions, they hit back, calling the cost of the strike "fantasy economics".

Now Francis Maude says he is considering laws which will make it harder for them to strike - but civil service union the PCS came out swinging accusing ministers of "erratic behaviour and wild allegations".
