Liberal Democrats Call In 'Brand Advisers'

Clegg

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has been advised to take a leaf of Oxfam's book in a bid to win back voters who have deserted the Liberal Democrats.

The party has hired "brand advisers" in an effort to revive their flagging electoral fortunes, according to leaked documents obtained by The Mail on Sunday.

They were said to have suggested a less principled approach to campaigning - once a "strategic, long-term brand model" had been devised, the party should develop "shorter-term themes, straplines and soundbites" to "support short-term political expediency".

The advisers also recommended that the party creates an "inspirational vision that directs evolution of the brand", such as "to create the most innovative and socially mobile nation".

They used the example of the charity Oxfam on the grounds that it has a clear vision to "end world poverty and suffering".

A Lib Dem spokesman denied that the the decision to bring in outside advisers was a panic measure in the face of falling poll ratings.

"There is no question of panic. This is work that has been going on for some months," the spokesman said.

"There is a general recognition that we need to work harder to get our message across. It is no secret that we have been conducting this exercise. It is part of the process of transition from being the third party."

After the causal way ALL 3 Parties brushed aside the Publics request for an open debate on the EU recently; we obviously did not understand all the "complex" issues like an MP; i now have NO FAITH in seeing real democracy at work in the Government of the UK.

New logo's, new "Tag lines" and lots of new Posters will simply add to my thinking that now all 3 parties simply see the "common folk" as cattle ready for "party" branding; cash milking and killing whenever they feel the need (wrapped in Patriotic need of course).

Politicians and Bankers....joint No 1 table toppers in the "Self Centred most Hated" category of jobs!

I think engagement is key with our principles front and centre http://michaelbeckettesq.blogspot.com/2011/09/whats-liberal-democrat-position.html as stated in our Liberal Democrats Federal constitution. However we need to be targeted and relevant to the issues that people are interested in.

I think the brand is "Tory" since the Lib Dems are no more that cheapskate opportunists who lied and deceived the electorate for the taste of power.

Ho Ho HO, lets change the headed paper lets change the logo, that will get the former dissolute members back. THink again matey.

YOU betrayed the ordinary grass roots Lib Dem voter by siding with a party we ALL hate and despise.

YOU betrayed the grass root members so you could have a bit of glory (and that is backfiring badly).

As a FORMER lib dem member, can I suggest a brand change. Get out of the tories game and get a leader that thinks of what the members needs and not him!

As far as I'm concerned they can waste as much cash as they want on branding as, as a party its all over, when these politicians realize that reneging on "pledges" and outright lying to the public during campaigns wont win them support in future elections then we just might be getting somewhere, the days of talking the talk in this country are over, the public want decent, honest politicians and are realizing NONE OF THE ABOVE fit the criteria.

"They were said to have suggested a less principled approach to campaigning"
Oh dear... what a surprise! The prniciple-free zone the LibDems became after the GE of 2010 is now looking to become even less principled? How?

"There is no question of panic. This is work that has been going on for some months,"
Is anyone expected to believe this? Remember it's a LibDem saying it.....

The remainder of the quotes suggest the LibDems are going to try selling us their politics in the same way as Heinz sell beans. Massive fail!

WLQ, you're right, but I'm a little slow on the uptake.  I'm still trying to wrap my mind around 'less principled.'  I am the 'say what you mean, do what you say' type; Either one has principles and sticks to them, or they are unprincipled. I'm not saying that's an easy way to live (it ain't), but at the end of the day I'm better off not. I don't have to spend my time answering 'you lied' or 'but you said' or the infamous 'you shoulda said that before.'  End of.
