Alastair Campbell Tells Leveson Inquiry: Modern Journalism Is Not About Truth (VIDEO AND PHOTOS)

Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 30/11/11 10:49 GMT Updated: 30/11/11 12:22 GMT

Alastair Campbell, the former Number 10 communications director, has said the "craft" of journalism is almost dead and ordinary people are used as news "commodities".

"I remember watching when Madeleine McCann went missing and I thought about writing to them. I could see the media using them and building them as a news commodity," he told the Leveson Inquiry.

He said her parents Gerry and Kate McCann became "anything goes people". "How nobody from the PCC didn't stand up and say what's going on here amazes me."

On the hounding of Britney Spears when she was clearly "disturbed" he said: "Does nobody say we should stop doing this? I don't think they do."

He added: "There's no transparency about the journalistic practices that they use to fill their papers.

"The public out there are horrified by what they've heard in the last two weeks ... my argument this is not atypical. This is what happens to anybody who they decide is a major news commodity".

There was controversy at the weekend after his evidence was leaked to a blogger and published.

A draft of his written evidence was posted online on Sunday by Paul Staines, who blogs under the name Guido Fawkes. The move prompted Lord Justice Leveson to make an order banning advance publication of documents submitted to the inquiry.

The inquiry will also hear from former Merseyside Police Inspector Alec Owens, who led Operation Motorman - the 2003 Information Commissioner's Officer (ICO) investigation into the media's use of inquiry agents in 2003.

On Tuesday the inquiry heard claims that News of the World (NotW) journalists hacked phones for their former editors Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson.

Paul McMullan, who worked for the now-defunct Sunday tabloid for seven years, said editors were aware their staff were illegally accessing voicemail messages but threw them "to the wolves" by denying all knowledge of it.

He described former editor Mrs Brooks as "the criminal-in-chief", alleging she "moulded" David Cameron before he became Prime Minister.

Ms Brooks and Mr Coulson have denied all knowledge of phone hacking.

Anyone shown to be trading on the trust and good nature of others in the manner Muckmurdoch & Co. have, must be stripped of their power.

Their wealth is an ill gotten gain that they aren't entitled to enjoy.

this man spent years working the press for blair. the fact is the sports results are perhaps the only truth in our papers today, If every news paper that printed a lie was shut down how many would be left the following day. Campbell is no saint the less said about that the better

He's right. Modern journalism seems to revolve around the salacious, the sleazy and the sensational. Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story is the watch phrase for journalists. Time we stopped buying newspapers or made them fully accountable if they decide to print lies and destroy people's lives.

Of course it is not about truth - particularly the coverage of politics which, as we all have learned to our cost, has almost nothing to do with truth.

You are totally correct in what you say, but I do not buy Newspapers as you just can not trust what they report, they all have various agendas. F & F

I actually thought that he was articulate quite entertaining .and having been in the same industry for decades appeared to know what he`s talking about. - Rather than the same conspiracy theorists, is there a single commentator on this thread who is in possession of any hard and fast evidence , not rumour, gossip and innuendo published relentlessly by the very papers he gave evidence against

A helluva a lot of uncomfortable home truths here for the Tory Biased Right Wing press, is this the same Daily Mail that supported Herr Hitler before the War? Not a lot`s changed really

Speak for yourself Campbell. The word "some" is missing from your accusations about journalists. We're not all liars and cheats y'know. I've recently retired after 25 years with the UK provincial print-media and I never needed to stoop so low as to invent a story because, in the early days, I went-out and found them, then reported what I saw and what I was told verbatim. After those early years - for the most part - the stories just kept coming to me, because my readers trusted me. And I repaid that trust with accuracy and truth. As for hacking voice-mails? I wouldn't know where to start even now, and I wouldn't want to know either!

Some journalists make it up as they go along, that's why they do so well as politicians.

Journalism in the UK has NEVER been about reporting the TRUTH. Read your history - its about manipulating the "Great Unwashed" by providing mindless pap and selling the owners party line. Don't forget the REAL message from one of the great press barons "NEVER LET THE TRUTH GET IN THE WAY OF A GOOD STORY"

Yes, they're just like 'dodgy dossiers' aren't they Mr Campbell?

Bl**dy hypocrite!
05:53 PM on 11/30/2011
To be absolutely fair to Alistair Campbell, it's never been shown that he had anything to do with writing the crap dossiers. Although of course the (largely Tory) press has been at pains to make out that he did.

I know he didn't write them, him & Blair 'went' by them! Which ultimately took us into an illegal war! So it's related to him in that way!
