Gordon Brown Makes Rare Appearance In Commons

Gordon Brown

The Huffington Post   David Hobbs First Posted: 01/12/11 11:19 Updated: 01/12/11 11:19

There was a rare sighting at Parliament on Wednesday night when Gordon Brown spoke in the House of Commons for only the second time this year.

The former prime minister was taking part in an adjournment debate over concerns of a radiation risk in Dalgety Bay in Fife, which is part of his constituency, and urged the defence minister, Andrew Robathan to "fund remedial work" as soon as possible.

Brown, who was supported by a number of Labour MPs in the commons, has only previously spoken twice in this parliament following his defeat in the 2010 General Election, first in November 2010 in another adjournment debate on aircraft carriers and in July this year during the debate on the Rupert Murdoch BSkyB bid.

Robathan, who was interrupted three times by the former Labour leader, told the House that the risk to public health "remains low" before adding "What a pleasure it is to discover how many people are concerned with the issues in Dalgety Bay."

Well as one of his constituents and having to live with this radiation fear for not only myself but my young family, I personally think your answer is appalling and just typical of a Tory. So glad you live in a safe environment. The fact you hate Gordon is of no matter, a decent human being would accept he was there to speak for us and thus not be so ignorant in answering this article!

I have no time for Grodon Brown or his failed politics, but your answer is so full of common sense I'm going to be your first fan. Maybe being a Fifer by birth helps as weel :-)

Fifelass... you posted a reply to my comment further down the thread, but... its been removed. I got it in my notification thingy and have zero idea why it didn't get past the mods. There was nothing offensive in it at all.... weird or what?
Anyway.. in reply to it.. I'm pleased that the kirkaldy area is happy with its man in westminster, even though he doesnt go there much. Former PMs do have the habit of missing out on that part of the job right enough. Personally I would have hoped for more from GB in that direction. I thought he was a man of conviction and essential decency. I dont have to agree with his politics to see those things in him, and am happy to re-state that if he's pleasing the folks in Fife, then all fair play to the man.

This really angers me since both you and I know that it was a decent post so it begs questioning why the MOD would not allow it. It wasn't offensive in any way,in fact it was an honest comment written in complete truth. Is it because the Mod is a Tory possibly and doesn't like positve comments about Gordon ;)
I feel that Gordon has shown Ed Miliband and the new Labour Cabinet a lot of respect too, he is no longer PM or leader so therefore the limelight should not be on him. We all know that the tory press are like bulldogs whenever theres news on Gordon so personally if there is nothing pressing to take him to Westminster that he could deal with at home then he will not intentionally dominate the press from Ed if you know what I mean. Say what you like about Gordon but he is very loyal to Labour and is a true politician in all ways, old school! Do you also know that any speeches that Gordon does goes to his and Sarah's charities and to paying staff for any work done for these speeches/trips.He does not take one penny to himself nor does the taxpayer fork out for his expenses etc. Unlike greedy, dishonest Blair and other politicians.
Anyways ,would you mind posting my comment again on my behalf and if it disappears again then I will make a complaint. At least thankfully, you have a copy of it.:)

I thought we had seen the last of that Brown stuff in the commons. He should stay away and become as rare as his party, that is as rare as an albatross. He never had anything constructive to offer in office, so I am certain he won`t have anything of any value to offer now he has been kicked out the door.

"He never had anything constructive to offer in office,"
Much like you on this thread then?

He was elected to represent a constituency and is effectively defrauding them by his absence. Imagine how your boss would react if you only showed up once in a blue moon. How long would you keep your job? The man should be there more often, doing what he draws his salary for. Like him and his politics or not (I don't btw) he does, or at least should, have a contribution to make. If he can't manage it, he should resign his seat and prompt a by-election so that people like fifelass (post above) can once more have their due representation at Westminster.

Do any of you read our local papers, visit the town or read about what Gordon does for those he represents...no?didn't think so! If we have nothing for him to come represent us on at Westminster would you still rather have Gordon fly down on taxpayers money, you'd soon have plenty to say and so would we. He votes on bills, writes asking questions etc and we are aware that he has a lower than average appearance but he isn't the first PM not make many appearances.Tory media are like vultures when he appears and bitch when he doesnt, he can't win. Where Gordon earns the real money is what he does for us in OUR constituency. He does so much for our young people, our pensioners, our disabled, our charities, bringing businesses and creating jobs, the list is endless.Isn't that whats important and what he gets paid for. We are happy with what Gordon does for us. He's always been there for us and he is one of us. We will always be there for him but wouldn't be afraid to tell him to his face if he wasn't doing what we paid him for, if you know Fifers then you know we aren't timid little sheep! In the 2010 election 29,000 voted for Gordon, a maj of 24,000. I think that speaks volumes. In Fife we are lucky to have Gordon as our MP and Torrance as our SNP MSP so get well looked after.
