MP Bets £150 On Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan Being Next Cabinet Sacking

Why Is Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan A Favourite With Paddy Power?

An MP has placed a £150 bet on Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan to be the next member to leave the Cabinet.

Last month, Mrs Gillan told politicians in the House of Commons they would be "wasting their money" if they took a punt on her stepping down.

She made the comments after Cardiff West MP Kevin Brennan asked the Welsh Secretary about a bookmakers which had slashed its odds on her departure.

Mr Brennan went to a Paddy Power shop near Westminster, where the Labour politician accepted a £150 charity wager at odds of 6/4 for Ms Gillan to be the next Government minister to vacate the Cabinet.

If the bet comes good, the payout will go to the Kidney Wales Foundation.

Mr Brennan said: "I was delighted to be able to place a charity bet on Cheryl Gillan being the next person to leave David Cameron's cabinet, given her opposition to the High Speed 2 rail link.

"Her odds may be shortening, but I look forward to visiting Paddy Power to collect my winnings which will be donated to the Kidney Wales Foundation.

"Kidney Wales Foundation is making a real difference to people's lives and if this fantastic charity can benefit from Cheryl's resignation then it will be a good day for Wales in more ways than one."

Paddy Power, the owner of the bookmaking firm which bears his name, said: "We are delighted to see Mr Brennan take up our favourable odds for a good cause.

"A flood of money came in for Cheryl Gillan the other day, pushing her from fourth favourite in the Cabinet sack race to top of the pile."
