Iran Crisis: British Ambassador Dominick Chilcott Describes 'Spiteful' Attack

British Embassy Iran

First Posted: 02/12/11 20:00 GMT Updated: 03/12/11 08:00 GMT   PA

Britain's ambassador to Iran has revealed how seven of his staff were seized by protesters during the terrifying attack on UK compounds in Tehran.

Dominick Chilcott said some workers and their relatives were sent to the embassy's residential complex in the north of the city before the protests for their safety, but ended up being taken by demonstrators who surged through security.

He said staff were in a worse predicament than those in the main embassy building because they had gone there thinking it was a "place of safety", so when the attack happened it was "more of a surprise".

Mr Chilcott, who was only appointed to the role in October, told how protesters rampaged through the main embassy, "vandalising" one of Britain's "great historic" buildings. A painting of the Queen was removed, while portraits of previous monarchs were mutilated and fires started in a "spiteful" attack.

He said he and his staff had "no idea how it was going to end" but were eventually escorted out by police who told them to "lie low".

He said there was a "chain of command" that linked to the hardline student protesters to the Iranian government and claimed there was a belief that "bashing the Brits" did a "lot of good".

He added: "Iran is not the sort of country where spontaneously a demonstration congregates then attacks a foreign embassy. That sort of activity is only done with the acquiescence and support of the state."

It comes as the last Iranian diplomats left the UK following the Government's decision to close their London base in response to the attacks. On Wednesday, Foreign Secretary William Hague gave Iran 48 hours to remove all staff from UK soil in response to the "outrageous and indefensible" incident.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "I can confirm that, earlier this afternoon, all diplomatic staff of the Iranian Embassy in London took off from Heathrow airport."

The latest developments were discussed by Prime Minister David Cameron during talks in Paris, where he thanked President Nicolas Sarkozy for his country's help. France was one of several European nations to withdraw ambassadors from Tehran in reaction to the looting of the building, which was widely condemned internationally.

Are we all sure that this action was taken because of sanctions? Sanctions that will allow China to get more oil and influence ? Reports that the Iranian nuclear industry has had unexplained explosions and computers hacked have not been widely reported in the UK ? Just who knows what the real truth is ? .

They burn our flag and destroy pictures of the Queen. Unlike some of these backward countries, you don't see the British rampaging in the streets calling for the heads of all Iranians, the reason being is the British are the most civilized people in the world .

Question.....what is the point of Huff Post if the majority of posts don't appear? If this post appears, then it will be the first out of several of mine to do so, and has nothing to do with the subject...that would be ironic.

Iran would not be another Iraq.Iran has a million soldiers, fully trained.A vast array of weapons and obviously will look at the history of attacks on Iraq. There are no "friendly " countries that the US or allies can use as a base near Iran, besides, both the US ,Britain and the other allies cannot afford a fight.Israel has nuclear weapons,do you honestly think they would use them without the sayso of the US ? The US keep Israel alive, without its aid of over 4billion dollars a year it would sink. Why would Iran want to fight ? It exports oil and has a healthy economy compared to many.
We may not like their political/religeos regime but they havent invaded other countries, unlike us.Attack Iran and that could well cause a war literally that becomes a world war

So we boycott the country, the price of oil goes up again or the other producers let a little more of their oil into the system and the Iranian oil stays in the ground and will still be there when the price rises.
Confiscation of all current Iranian funds and property in this country might be a good idea, but may deter other countries from buying British assets (win/win for us).
Why should we concern ourselves with the politics of this shabby regime?
Like all systems it will eventually be gone.
Hopefully the Umma wil never happen, certainy not when these muslim countries cannot even deal with each other.

What a pity we got rid off the Shah. When he was strong Saddam Hussein behaved. There was no Taliban and Afghanistan would certainly not have faced upto Iran. Yes he was a despot, but compared to what came after, he was quite reasonable. Iran should have been a stabilising influemce, in the Gulf region. We should still be trying to reach out directly to the Iranian people, not the government. May the World Service win through. Iran needs to be its own saviour as a middle of the road democracy. Good luck to them.

Good Rid. We could aways send Jeremy Clarkson round to escort them to the Airport. No doubt some will soon try and return in the back of a lorry through Calais?

I cannot for the life of me see the reason why this power crazy little man ordered the closure of the Iranian Embassy. I have written to him by recorded delivery asking him why he is a member of a foreign country's political lobby group in this country, "friends of Israel" also perhaps he will explain the reasons Israel gave him £38,000 and what did he do with this money? There is something very odd here when a member of Government supports a foreign country and accepts money from that same country. The same applies to Fox except he was given in excess of £148,000. The Israeli embassy was razed to the ground in Egypt, no action by Israel, the Iranian Embassy attacked with molotov cocktails no action from Iran. What is Hagues game and what are his motives?

At least we are in the right, and there will be less unpaid parking fines. It is a shame in another way, as we will be unable to have proper diplomatic relations with this country.

My, my:

But sending Predator- and Reaper-drones after unsuspecting civilians in foreign contries and waging a full-out undercover war inside Iran is better politics, eh?

Both sides are staking out their territory across the Middle East as BRICS countries warn the West about interventions."
