Katla: Icelandic Volcano Could Change Global Climate, According To BBC Report

Katla

Earth's climate could be disrupted by a huge volcanic eruption in Iceland, according to a BBC report.

Were it to erupt, Katla, which boasts a 6.2-mile crater, could pump enough ash and sulphuric acid into the atmosphere to cool the planet's climate, while the melting of “billions of gallons” of frozen glacier water would cause catastrophic flooding in Iceland.

"There has been a great deal of seismic activity," National Geographic's Ford Cochran told the BBC.

"There have been more than 500 tremors in and around the caldera of Katla just in the last month, which suggests the motion of magma. And that certainly suggests an eruption may be imminent," he added.

Katla erupts every 40 to 80 years, meaning it is now “overdue”, while a seismic disturbance recorded on July 9 has some experts predicting that a full eruption is imminent.

"The July 9 event seems to mark the beginning of a new period of unrest for Katla, the fourth we know in the last half century," said Professor Pall Einarsson.

The fallout from Katla could dwarf the Eyjafjallajokull eruption of 2010, which brought air traffic across Europe to a halt.

In 1783, the Laki crater fissures, which run through the south of Iceland and include Katla, erupted for eight months, causing a "nuclear winter” that changed earth's temperature.

"One certainly hopes that Katla's eruption will not be anything like that!" said Cochran.

The sock puppet army blanketing this thread with denier talking points: why don't you come back when you can explain the following:

The 1994 TASSC memo showing how PR firm APCO Worldwide planned to export the astroturf science denial model they developed for big tobacco for sale to the fossil fuel lobby, among others: http://tobaccodocuments.org/pm/2024233595-3602.html

The 1998 API memo showing how big oil's trade association sells the very same model to its stakeholders: http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Global_Climate_Science_Communications_Plan

The 2002 memo from Frank Luntz showing how he sells it to the GOP: http://www.ewg.org/project/luntz-memo-environment

George Monbiot's discovery of how PR uses online operatives to spread their memes and disrupt honest discourse: http://www.monbiot.com/archives/2010/12/13/reclaim-the-cyber-commons/

And the recent revelation that software bots are being deployed for the same purpose: http://www.desmogblog.com/are-climate-deniers-and-front-groups-polluting-online-conversation-denier-bots

A major volcanic eruption with the potential of causing world wide crop failures and famine such as those which occurred in 1816 after the Tambora eruption in 1815 is touted as a just another great excuse for a tax cut.
21:34 on 13/12/2011
just a thought the average car must have at least £600 plus of emission sensors on it ,times the amount of cars on the road from 1990s ,how much tax is that ? for the government plus all of them MOT emission failures , and the tax on work done to these cars ,not forgetting the taxes on fuels.
It must have run into trillions !

In some states in the good ole US of A you have to have a caterlitic converter on your wood burner ,
and that is a state law ,the laws in GB in 2012 2013 state you will have to have a particle filter on a diesel vehicle ,this will raise billions in tax revenue ,because of the cost of the unit ,then the fitting and sensors ,and then it has to be emptied 2 or 3 times a year depending on your mileage ,at a cost of hundreds of pounds ,the vehicle does less mpg and the performance drops off .

petrol vehicle will have the CO2 levels lowered for the mot ,so no gets to be compliant unless you drive a vehicle with small emission chocked engine ,and then as your vehicle is not compliant you get forced to pay a much higher road tax and get fined for driving into an emission zone .

what was it someone said [grab them by the emissions and there hearts and minds will follow !
20:40 on 13/12/2011
when was the last time a country was fined for pollution on a mega scale ,like CO2 from a volcano ,the answer is never, but you can tax individuals . anyone measured the CO2 output from a volcano ?
well the governments do measure air pollution and then dream up more ways to tax us using the results from the tests !
20:24 on 13/12/2011
And there was me thinking that all of those billions the government made out of taxing us for our emissions was a good investment !

Wow, this has become a forum for experts in geologic activity. I'm dazzled by all the knowledge here!
21:41 on 13/12/2011
and your contribution is !

Maybe the Copenhagen promise to limit CO2 to a 2 deg rise wasn't so foolish - anything goes I say
11:14 on 03/12/2011
A good reason then to tax us even more, we could even pay a tax just for the threat of it. Govts must be rubbing there hands in glee.
10:51 on 03/12/2011
I wonder how much it cost to state the bleeding obvious
08:28 on 03/12/2011
Climate change........... the ultimate government fund raisier!!
23:57 on 02/12/2011
Hi,
Assuming this happens, then it will presumably silence all the global warming people and therefore eradicate the necessity to continuously increase the tax levy on fuel - whether it be petrol, diesel, gas or electric.
Let's all hope it happens sooner rather than later so that we can see a substantial reduction in our fuel costs.
Or is that simply presuming that the government are adding onto the costs in order to save the planet rather than simply trying to feather their nests?
What do you think?..

"Assuming this happens, then it will presumably silence all the global warming people "

Why? Do you think a year or two of volcanic cooling somehow negates the longer term effects of the trillion tons of greenhouse gases that we've added to the atmosphere?

a little birdie tells me that most of the co2 comes from plants
11:16 on 03/12/2011
so chrisd3, as cattle produce more gas than any other medium, shall we cull all cattle.

If there is Global cooling, will the UK Government return all the rip off "Green taxes" that they have ripped off us over the years, under the pretence of preventing " Global Warming"???? !!!, regards, Duncan Pettett.

You understand that any such global cooling would last for a year or two at the most, until the aerosols wash out of the atmosphere, right?

A large volcano eruption would at best be a temporary reprieve. Meantime the continued release of CO2 into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels is continuing to cause the larger catastrophe of global warming.

God bless mother nature, suppose she does what she has to do, and fair dues, forces of nature are truly wake up calls! I`m a believer of everything happens 4 a reason and maybe divine intervention, prewarns folk to take heed, as we know lessons are never learned, as too many 4get or assume ignorance is bliss, it has to be knowledge is bliss and of course, writing in revelation is truly revealing!

Well there you are. Climate change? No problem after all - just higher welly boots for the Icelandics and less sun block for the rest of us. Now, about economic meltdown, demise of the Euro, armageddon Iran style.......
