Argentina could send athletes to the London Olympics wearing badges stating the country’s claim to the Falkland Islands.

The proposal, which has received widespread political support, has been forwarded in a bill put to the Argentinian National Congress.

It’s proposer, Rosana Bertone, is a member of Argentina’s ruling left-wing Frente para la Victoria (Front for Victory) party.

The country's president, Cristina Kirchner, has stated that Argentina and Britain should negotiate over ownership of the Islands, however, should the bill pass, an image of the archipelago wrapped in an Argentinian flag will adorn the Argentinian national team kit, while the athletes’ shirts would bear the words “Las Islas Malvinas son Argentinas” (the Falklands are Argentina’s).

The islands in the South Atlantic are part of a long-standing sovereignty dispute between the UK and Argentina.

In 1982, Argentinian forces invaded the territory, which have been under British rule since 1883. The subsequent 10-week conflict led to the deaths of 255 Britons, 655 Argentines and three islanders.

Diplomatic relations were reestablished in 1990, but successive Argentine governments have stated their intention to reclaim “Las Malvinas”.

On hearing the news, Tory MP for Romford Andrew Rosindell said: If this goes ahead it would be a terrible insult to the people of the Falkland Islands, who have a democratic right to be British."

Last month, the Ministry of Defence revealed that Prince William, a Flight Lieutenant with the RAF, will deploy to the remote outcrop in the South Atlantic for six weeks next year to fly search and rescue helicopter missions.

Although the Chief of the Defence Staff denied the move was provocative, Argentine official Sebastian Brugo Marco said his country could not ignore the "political" implications of his move, which comes shortly before the 30th anniversary of Argentina's defeat in the Falklands.

Argentina got beat in the war and will get beat in the Olympics what ever badge they choose to were. I guess the next claim will be from Carlos Tevez who will try and hold England to ransom like he is doing to Man City, he can't get in the team so he sulks which is exactly what the Argy Bargies are doing by even suggesting the wearing of the Falklands badge.

I was over there during the Falklands conflict, and as far as I am concerned there is no issue, The Falklands are BRITISH and should stay british, otherwise those people that faught to keep them in British hands would have died for nothing, as for the Argies they can wear what ever they like, they can demonstrate as much as they like but they aint gettin em back, unless the EU says it's against the Argies human rights and in which case our spinless mp's would agree to hand them over. we are funding an unwinnable war in Afghanistan, we found the recorces to bomb Lybia, we maintain a presence in Iraq, all of which we were never justified in doing, I have always said that the Falklands war was justifiable we were repeling an invading force and there was a beggining a middle and an end,AND we did it on our own funny how the Yanks didn't want to involve them selves to much here wasn't it..! and if the Argies try again then the same should apply, I just hope that this current coalition circus are not in the driving seat if it does happen, cos they'll probably just hand them over and tell us that we should all embrace the Argentine culture...!

In fairness dim the US didn't want to be seen publicly to be acting against another part of the America's and one that was an ally of theirs..behind the scenes they provided the UK with the latest versions of the Sidewinder missile for the Sea Harriers, provided anti radar missiles for the Vulcan's on their bombing missions, other logistic and material backup and satellite and other intelligence to the UK about Argentine military movements

I know they did, but when it suits there own agender they like to be out and about and shouting loudly about it,and I did say that they didn't want to involve them selves TOO MUCh not that they wern't involved at all and it,s DLM by the way although others may preffer dim, but hey.. I don't really care if they do because we are all entitled to our opinions, thanks for the comment by the way.

It may be the only medal they get, but as an ex soldier I can tell you they can run like the wind.

Well said. The Falklands were first discovered by a British Navigator. Most of South America was conquered by the Spanish. Their decendants are still there, occupiers. They are fine ones to talk about stealing land.Tell them to take a hike.Wear a tee shirt with the Belgrano on it.

Rule 50 (3) Olympic Charter dated 8 July 2011:

No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in
any Olympic sites, venues or other areas

I think that rule should be invoked to stop Argentina continuing with this nonsense - and if they persist, send the lot of them home!

If the Argentinians like history how about this one.

Between 1976 and 1982 - Argentinian's fascist military dictatorship "disappeared" up to 30,000 political dissidents.

April 1982 - Military junta invades Falklands as a desperate attempt to rally the population. British forces win, quickly. Casualties :"255 British and 649 Argentine soldiers, sailors and airmen, as well as 3 civilian Falklanders."

June 1982- The humiliating defeat of Argentina leads to resignation of Galtieri (Argentine dictator, real bad guy).

December 1983- Civilian government of Raúl Alfonsín sworn in. Members of the forma junta arrested and eventually charged with human rights violations from the Dirty War and Operation Condor.

I think the UK deserves a thank you card.

If they want them, come and get them, their reception may be a tad different than last time.

The Argentinian olympic team should be banned from this country if they persist with this silly idea!

Politics have no place at the Olympic Games.

This is clearly a political statement and should be banned.

By the end of this decade Argentina will possess the Falklands because Cameron has destroyed our armed forces.
00:35 on 03/12/2011
I think not!
05:56 on 03/12/2011
You hope not. I hope you are right but they know we have no carriers or ways of getting planes out there.

Marky..a very large airfield (RAF Mount Pleasant) was built on the Falklands after the war. There are currently Typhoon fighters out there (which replaced the previous Tornado F3 fighters) and both the Typhoons on the way down and the Tornado's on the way back flew under their own steam to and from the islands with in flight refuelling en route..

Silly, silly Argies.

I think it only fair that argentina should be returned to native tribes that were decimated by those nasty conquistadors.
The european imperialists could be given the option to return to spain or claim asylum in whatever the native tribes want to call it!

We could get Jeremy Clarkson, Boris Johnson and the Duke of Edinburgh to officially greet them on arrival in the UK - that should do it !!!!!!!
21:35 on 02/12/2011
'GOTCHA' a simple logo worn by all should stop that silly idea.
I would consider such apparel a threat to the British populace and throw anyone wearing such an offensive and provocking symbol out of our country.

Should make a very suitable target patch for our Olympic shooting team and archers to aim for !!!!!

We could of course tell the Met they are Brazilians !!!!!!!
