Animal Testing Life Science Companies To Be Given Access To NHS Files

Patient records and other NHS data would be shared with private health care companies under plans being unveiled by David Cameron next week.

The Prime Minister is to promise far closer collaboration between the health service and life science companies, including giving them more freedom to run clinical trials inside hospitals.

In a keynote speech on Monday, he is expected to insist that the controversial industry can be a powerhouse of Britain's economy if excessive regulation can be eased.

However, the reforms will encounter strong opposition from privacy campaigners who have consistently opposed wider access to medical records. Labour is also likely to paint the changes as another step towards NHS privatisation by the back door.

With fears mounting that Britain could be on the verge of slipping back into recession, Mr Cameron is due to stress the potential benefits of greater integration between private companies and the NHS. Patients could get faster access to cutting-edge treatments, the Government could save money, and the economy could be boosted.

A Downing Street source told the Sunday Telegraph: "Britain has the potential to become a powerhouse in the world's life sciences industry. We want to see much closer collaboration between the NHS and life science companies - not just greater data-sharing, but more clinical trials in hospitals. These changes will not only boost the industry, but also potentially give the NHS early access to new, innovative drugs treatments."

Ministers believe Britain is uniquely placed to become a world leader in life sciences because of the strength of scientific research at its top universities and the mass of expertise in the NHS. The industry already employs more than 160,000 people in 4,500 companies, and has an annual turnover of £50 billion.

It is not clear whether private firms would be charged for access to NHS records, but data would be expected to be anonymised.

Other government-held data, such as the Met Office's weather records and the most detailed Ordnance Survey mapping is being opened up.

Joyce Robbins, from Patient Concern, said many people would be "deeply disturbed" by the notion that their private medical records could be handed to firms seeking new markets.

Is Dr Mengele reincarnated and running this Lunatic Asylum called Britain. This latest lunatic scheme advocated by the Tories reminds me of the experimentation done by Mengele on patients in the name of scientific research, and people are obviously a replacement for lab RATS???

Forgive me if I am being dumb, but surely under the Human Rights Act - Article 8 would not this be illegal as Article 8- refers to the right to respect for private and family life, home and correspondence and under the heading Confidential Information (see this link for the full wording http://www.yourrights.org.uk/yourrights/privacy/confidential-information.html ) clearly states
' Historically, protection of confidential information depended on three main elements:

· The information itself would have to be confidential in nature - for example, health records or personal diaries.
· The person with the information must be under a duty to keep it confidential.
· The proposed use of the information must be incompatible with that duty.

Therefore the current Government are in essence breaking the law with this proposal. I have no objection for certain information being passed to whoever, if it will save lives and have taken part in drug trials for the treatment of cancer, however my medical history is between me and my doctor - and is nobody else's business but mine. It will be interesting to see if anyone else spots this infringement of the Human Rights Act.

What have medical science and drug companies ever done for us?
OK, apart from irradicate childhood cancers, supply vacination against life threatening illnesses, save countless lives, treat illnesses that killed thousands only decades ago, bring pain relief to millions.................

Terrible behaviour! How dare Cameron be so flippant about handing over our data and hearald that it's going to be something for our benefit. Unbelievable. And anonymous data, that's likely. Who's going to go through all the data and scrub out all the names, why would they pay someone to do that. This is a massive infringement on our civil liberties. Once it's outside of the public sector who knows who could get hold of it and what this could affect.

Does this sort of thing happen in the rest of the EU countries if not and if Camoron allows some private firm to access my medical records without my permission would I be able to take it to the court of human rights, because I would object to some tory donor company knowing anything about my medical history

Oh no! If this happens, these companies might do even more to try to save lives. We must put a stop to this.

THE NEXT TIME YOU ARE IN COURT
So you have a case of personal injury then the defending lawyers starts asking you questions about your medical history ,hey wait a minuet i forgot i had a curvature of the spine i was only 7 !
well they got that information from your medical records ,and will use it to minimise your claim for damages ,the government opted you in to a scheme a couple of years ago ,they told you that it was going to put all medical records onto computer ,you know the one they spent 80 million pounds on it and it never worked ,yes that one ,plan be was that sell your information to the insurance companies to mininmise there loses when people claimed against them !

What do you know - something else not in the tory manifesto.
03:08 PM on 12/04/2011
do you rember a couple of years ago the government opted us all into a scheme where your medical notes were to made to be available to HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ,AND IF YOU DID NOT WANT THAT you could oped out well what they did not tell you was that insurance companies employ health professionals ,and if you have a claim for injury they weigh all of your medical history up and you will lucky to receive anything at all ,as the RBS ,royal bank of scotland own 6 insurance companies ,it all starts to sound a bit suspect or is that just me ?
