Socrates, the Brazilian football legend, has died after losing his battle against an intestinal infection.

The 1982 World Cup icon, 57, was taken to hospital in Sao Paulo on Thursday after struggling following a hotel meal.

Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, was a qualified doctor and found fame at Brazilian giants at Corinthians in the early 1980s.

He went on to win 60 international caps and scored 22 goals.

He had struggled with his health in recent months and reports says it was third time he'd been taken to hospital since August.

In 2004 Socrates made a bizarre appearance for English lower-league team Garforth Town.
