Space Chief Builds Craft In Mother's Back Yard (VIDEO)

It might not have the budget of NASA, but the African Space Research Programme hopes to join the space race - thanks to an ambitious boss and a spot in his mother's back yard.

Chris Nsamba, founder of ASRP, says he is currently working with a team of volunteers to create a plane that will fly at 80,000ft and penetrate the edge of space.

And despite construction taking place in the back yard of his mother's home in Uganda, he already has plans for a space shuttle and wants to see the first Ugandan into space within the next decade.

Currently construction of the African Skyhawk Jet is limited to a shell and the project lacks an engine, but Nsamba is confident it will launch next year for testing.

So far the budget has been limited to $80,000 raised in donations, but Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has now reportedly backed the programme and pledged (undisclosed) financial support.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, former astronomy student Nsamba said: "It isn't about money, it isn't about competition or pride. The mission is about advancement in space technology as a continent and what we can contribute towards that growth.

Increase aid-? Are you joking, because Africa will never catch up no matter how many billions we put in.! In many countries they're going backwards, & have been for many years.
This guy should go & talk to the Ugandan Navy, they'll help.

It may looka joke, but watching the video, this guy comes across as intelligent, passionate and has a craving for this project. He's an african from a village and seems to be educated to a level which in my book is high, considering his status and location. He has dreams and to construct what he has built so far in a garden where they do not have the manufacturing of what we have in our countries, then he should be snapped up by someone somewhere who is in the field. You give this guy a job and he will put every effort in to educate himself further and i bet he will be a more outstanding employee than many other white employees. I have travelled parts of africa and they love their education and i hope this guy does something with himself. It's a pity the report did not show more of his tools and his methodology of how he has built this craft so far. I would have expected his tools to be basic and by showing the tools, i think it would come across differently to many people. The black africans can make anything out of anything. They have skills in their hands that enables them to build and survive.

Having been in various parts of Africa I understand the mentality.
We can do it, despite the fact that we can't.
The dreams are more important than the reality.
Starvation all around, corrupt governments stealing 'aid' and still people dream of other things.
A continent so rich in natural resources, so many bright people, let us hope they never catch up with us or we are screwed

So, that email I received from a "Ugandan businessman" needing money was true!

I do hope we increase our aid to African countries, its not cheap going into space you know.with all those little kiddies who die of starvation and lack of water, if they can launch a shuttle, thats bound to help them. God speed you wonderful caring people.

Loads of people without food or medical care, but that's not important, let's go to space (without an engine that is).

No engine? Hmm.
06:24 PM on 12/04/2011
Hm, no engine as yet otherwise everything seems to be going er, OK. Maybe would have been better to build the plane around the engine but I'm sure they must know what they are doing.
