Rise In Demand For 'Mangagement' Rings For Men

The Huffington Post UK   Posted: 05/12/2011 09:06 GMT

First there was 'manscara', 'guyliner' and more recently, the launch of the first set of 'guylashes' but now it seems metrosexual men are trying to muscle in on another female aesthetic - 'mangagement' rings.

According to jewellery experts, there is a growing trend in men wearing engagement rings as they happily adopt the same public 'pre-commitment' signs women make when wearing a diamond ring on their left hand.

"Men and women both wear engagement rings in a lot of countries around the world. Engagement rings for men are a new concept in the United States," says Amanda Gizzi from the Jewelry Information Center.

While some men may think that them wearing a diamond ring is a metrosexual step too far and is best left to the ladies, jewellery trend experts claim that it's not necessarily about the size of the diamond, but the meaning behind it that appeals to men more.

"The idea that the man will also wear an engagement ring gives relationships a new sense of equality. It is a pre-commitment, commitment from both the man and woman," says Gizzi.

Experts also believe that the rise in 'mangagement' rings signal a new-found equality among men and allow men to show the world that they're 'off the market'.

Although engagement rings for men sound foreign to many, it's nothing new in countries like Brazil and Argentina, where the groom-to-be wears his 'mangagement' ring with pride.

Are you a 'mangagement' ring wearer and proud?

We are all going down the pan financially and someone comes up with yet another 'idea' to try and get us to spend more money on more things that we don't need...

my fiance has a celtic band that he wears proudly and we will incorporate the design into our wedding rings! Most men I know regardless of age and who are engagedwear one, I personally think the "commitment" ring is a newer phenemenon.

a male engagement ring is a very new concept, older men you know will be wearing a signet ring, they were always given as a present on the 21st birthday and later on the 18th

My late husband wore a very masculine Claddaugh ring I'd bought him from Ireland when we got engaged. (I'm Irish) He wore it proudly on his right hand after the wedding and treasured it always...

When I got engaged in 1965 I had an engagement ring ( a signet type) This is not a new phenomenum just things going round again like fashions. By the way I still have my engagement ring.

When my wife and I got engaged 24 years ago, I bought her a traditional diamong cluster engagement ring, and she bought me a signet ring with a diamond set in it, so this is nothing new.

"Management" ring - sounds like some kind of nose ring where the person being "managed" is led by a chain. Does the female of the species wear the "boss" ring I wonder. I was proud to be engaged many years ago and I have worn my wedding ring since 1972. This whole event sounds like a good commercial enterprise to put it politely.

My fiance wears an engagement ring (it was his idea) but it doesn't have any stones in it. He opted for a wide titanium band. We both really like it and we love what it symbolizes.

I don't necessariliy think a DIAMOND "Management Ring" is necessary but I do think it's about time men show the world they are taken too. I never understood why women had that "I belong to someone" symbol but an engaged man didn't. An engaged man would still be seen as availible to other women since he wasn't wearing a ring. My husband of seven years and I got engaged right before we started college (together 13 years). When we got engaged, he got a "midevil wedding band" to wear on his left hand. When people asked about it, he said he was engaged and that's his version of an engagement ring.

I really like the idea of the man wearing something but a diamond ring might be much. More men (not just metrosexuals) would wear one if the stone in question was more manly (perhaps a garnet or saphirre). I assume the bands in question are from the men's section of the jewelry counter.
