Iranian Foreign Minister 'Deeply Sorry' For British Embassy Raid

Ali Akbar Salehi

The Iranian foreign minister has expressed regret about the storming of Britain's embassy in Tehran by demonstrators, German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle has said.

The German ministry reported that Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi had said he "was deeply sorry for what has happened" and vowed "to do everything to prevent such an incident from happening again".

The ministers were holding bilateral talks in Bonn ahead of a global conference on Afghanistan's future.

The statement says Mr Westerwelle stressed that an attack on one of the European Union's diplomatic missions "is perceived as being directed against the missions of all EU member states".

It says Mr Westerwelle has also urged Iran to co-operate with the international community to shed light on its controversial nuclear programme.

I would like to see Iran apologise to America for the attack on it's embasy in 1979 where some 50 or so diplomats were held hostage for 444 days.

So other countries are talking to our masters in Bonn rather than directly to us. Now will people see what the EU is - we might as well have given up in 1939 and saved alot of lives.

Since we have broken off all direct diplomatic contact with the Iranians, how else would the Iranians express some regret, other than by talking to the diplomats of another country?

By email
By fax
By phone
By letter
By headline in one of their papers
By talking to one of our papers
We don't start talking again by not talking

All I say is why did the Iranian Goverment organise the raid on the British Embassy in the first place, no such raid or riots happen in Iran on a spontaneously, and without authorisation at the highest level

Larijani with the authorization of Khamenei to discredit Ahmadinejad who was against lowering relations with the UK among other reasons.

If the regret was real then the offenders would be rounded up and punished but of course that isn't going to happen and they were probably put up to it anyway.

I think, the first question that should be asked is why a bunch of Angry Iranians attacked the British Embassy instead of Spain, Italy, Greece or anyone else.

U.S.,U.K. and Israel are playing a game of Poker which is based on lies and deceit but Iran is playing a game of Chess which is based on strategy and intelligence.

Why do people assume Israel will attack Iran? They wont move unless given the go ahead by the US .The US wont as it cant afford another war ,especially with a country that has 1 million soldiers.Israel will continue to assassinate engineers and scientists they feel are involved in building anything to do with nuclear power in the hope it will delay construction. The Iranian leader is not on good terms with the mullahs,so feels the need to "preen his feathers" and hope by stating what he intends to do against Israel will get him re elected.Lets hope no power feels it needs to act the same way the US and Britain did over Iraq.

"They wont move unless given the go ahead by the US ."

Really? Why do you assume that the US has retained its past influence with its lesser allied partners? Iraq just told them to get out. Also I reckon that Israel did not clear it with Uncle Sam before they attacked the Gaza bound convoy from Turkey.

Probably because the US subsidises the Israeli army quite heavily. He who pays the piper.....
