Frozen Planet has successfully captured the nation's hearts every Wednesday for the last couple of months - with its bumbling bears and playful penguins, not to mention the too-cool-for-school just-born polar bears snuggling for warmth in their sub-snow crib last week.
Tonight sees the final episode of this masterful series, with the production team turning their attention to the effect of rising temperatures in the polar regions on humans - Inuits adapting centuries-old habits to cope - and wildlife - bears in the Arctic going on a frantic search for food as the sea ice disappears beneath their feet.
With one section following scientists in Greenland monitoring waterfalls of meltwater, and another stunning sequence charting the break-up of the Wilkins Ice Shelf, Frozen Planet also makes clear, if it needed telling, how vulnerable the polar regions of the earth are to global warming, and the knock-on effect this will have on the rest of the planet's thermal systems.
It is seldom that a contemporary television series so easily takes its place on the shelf alongside other timeless classics, but the same team who brought us Planet Earth and Blue Planet have completed their trilogy on the world in style.
And it was fitting that Sir David, inevitably slowing down after half a century of broadcasting from around the planet, was able to make his only ever trip to the North Pole for the conclusion of this mammoth undertaking. So, let's sit back one more time and revel in the beauty, and fragility, of our undiscovered surroundings.
