Tweeting MPs Should Use #Commons Hashtag

The House of Commons should have its own Twitter "hashtag" in an effort to bring Parliament in to the modern age, an MP has said.

Tory David Morris, MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale, has urged colleagues to use #commons in their tweets from the Chamber to help the public follow debates.

In a Commons motion he said: "It is important to keep up with modern communication techniques."

Twitter users put a hash symbol in front of a word or phrase to help link messages on a similar subject.

Mr Morris' motion said grouping messages together would "help the public engage with politicians" but it was "vital to come up with a common hashtag" that all MPs used.

Under Mr Morris' plan a user could search the site for messages with #commons in them to find out what has been said in the Chamber.
