Scotland Hit By 165mph Winds As Twitter Dubs Storm 'Hurricane Bawbag' (Photos) (Video)

Scotland and northern England have been hit with winds of up to 165mph, leaving thousands without power and shutting down schools and airports, closing roads and cancelling trains as far south as Newcastle.

The Met Office issued a red weather warning alert as the severe winds battered rush-hour traffic.

In the Aonach Mor, near to Fort William, gusts of 130mph were recorded. The Met Office said the winds reached between Gale Force 8 and strength 11 in places.

Even as the storm hit, however, users of Twitter found time to see the lighter side. They dubbed the winds 'Hurricane Bawbag' and by 3pm it was possible to buy T-shirts marking the occasion.

In Strathclyde, Central Scotland, Borders, Dumfries and Galloway police asked people not to travel as bridges and roads were forced to shut. The Forth Bridge and the Erskine Bridge have closed. ScotRail was forced to cancel services, while Network Rail imposed speed restrictions and said up to 350 staff members were attempting to complete repairs.

Live video from webcams showed bridges in central Glasgow swaying in the wind.

Flooding in Cumbria close to Lake Windermere left some cars adrift in water, while in Wales and Northern Ireland strong winds and heavy rain were also reported.

On the Western Isles many were left without electricity according to Scottish Hydro. The company said that the weather was too bad for staff to climb electricity poles to restore power.

Central Scotland Police Assistant Chief Constable Allan Moffat, speaking to the BBC for the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, said: "The advice for motorists across the central belt of Scotland is to avoid travel, as the severe weather moves across the country from west to east, starting around noon on the west side of the country.

"It is expected that the impact of the weather will affect the east side of the country from 2pm onwards.

"This advice to avoid travel is not given lightly but is based on the clearest information yet from weather forecasters that there will be high winds with gusts of up to 90 miles per hour."

The Scottish government's resilience committee met on Thursday after five meetings on Wednesday to discuss the response to the weather.

If you think that was bad, just wait until the weather pattern that crossed the States yesterday reaches you. It was a devastating blow to Americas East Coast and it will travel across the sea. Good Luck. Global Climate Change is no joke.

I bet the tories will find some way of blaming labour for it.
Or will it be taxable.

Aye. It's the winds coming up from the South and from Edinburgh that cause the real troubles.

The people of North West Scotland have just suffered some of nature's worst but I would ask, at this time, to spare a thought for those guys out there at sea, bringing you the overseas foods and goods you buy in your stores. Being a retired merchant seaman and been through many many storms and even typhoons and hurricanes, I can tell you that it's pretty scary stuff out there at times. I survived to retirement but many don't and many ships that go down aren't even reported by the media. Not newsworthy you see.

I was afraid to ask what bawbags were so I went and googled them. So that's what's worn under the kilt.

Funny, I heard a lady ask a man in a kilt once what was worn under them, and he said "Nothing madam, everything is in perfect working order."

I hope all you folks in Scotland and on the Isles re safe, dry and warm.

T-shirts to celebrate a hurricane? Why, back in the states they would . . . they would . . . make T-shirts celebrating a hurricane a crime!
If you Brits believe that you'd believe that you guys won the Revolutionary War and that George III was actually sane!

Don't be silly. The DAY AFTER the Japanese tsunami there were "I survived the tsunami" tee-shirts for sale here and within 3 days there were special "Aloha" tees being sold to raise money for Japan.

I'm a Brit and in typical ignorant Brit style I neither know or care who George III is, and have never heard of the Revolutionary War.

It goes like this - The Americans were revolting, and we binned the lot of 'em.

I live in Inverness myself, and have to say that even though we weren't as badly hit as the central belt, the city certianly got hammered by the winds.I hope the people further south didn't get hurt - there were some really close calls, that's for sure!

As ever though, how can we Scottish not use humor in situations like this? If we didn't, it would most likely be a harbringer of the Apocalypse!

I lived in Inverness, too, one time. Or course, we're talkin' the Inverness in Marin County, California which has no Loch Ness monsters.
07:28 AM on 12/09/2011
No Loch Ness monsters. Thats so sad for you :-(
12:02 PM on 12/09/2011
I've never been to the Inverness in Marin County before, but I'm guessing it's having better weather the moment!

People saying it was blown way out of proportion. No it wasn't. We all thought it was an ordinary windy day to begin with, but then around sunset we were in the eye of the storm. Never in my life have I seen that, and being a storm freak I knew we were in the eye of a hurricane. And looking at the behaviour of the front on satellite imaging through Dundee University, knew for definate that it was a hurricane just by the simple fact that the clouds circled. It was caused by a cold front coming from Greenland, Canada and Iceland mixing with a warm front coming from the Gulf stream. While it may seem impossible, it happened, and we were in the middle of it. Slap bang in the middle of it. So no, it wasn't blown out of proportion. If you saw the damage caused by the winds and the fact that the River Tay resembled rapids with the wind blowing the surf UPWARDS, and the damage to cars caused by falling branches, and how most, if not all the bridges in Scotland were closed... yeah. Totally in proportion.
