Plans For Public To Rate Care Homes

Care Home

Members of the public will be able to rate care homes for the elderly on a new website under plans being developed by the Government.

All care providers would be rated in a searchable online database, set to work in a similar way to hotel reviews site TripAdvisor.

Records of mistreatment or abuse by staff will be included, along with the latest information from inspections as well as feedback from residents and their relatives.

The system is intended to expose failures to treat people with dignity and respect, such as abuse and theft.

Full details will be set out in a White Paper on social care, due to be published in the spring.

Under the proposals, relatives of care users will also be encouraged to join scrutiny teams, who will visit residents to speak about their experience of care.

Care services minister Paul Burstow has asked officials to work out how to implement the plans, which emerged following a consultation with the public and charities.

Mr Burstow said: "The reason I'm so excited by these new ideas is they came from care users themselves. Measures like publishing social care comparison sites and opening care services up to greater scrutiny will revolutionise the way people and their loved-ones choose their social care.

"It can't be right that you can find out exactly what a hotel or restaurant is like, in just a short time searching the web, but people have so much trouble working out the standards of different care homes and home care providers - when that choice is so much more important.

"I hope providers of good quality care will welcome that we're looking for new ways to highlight the good work they do to care for people. And for those areas where standards aren't so good, I want people to get the message loud and clear that we're intent on doing absolutely all we can to shine a light on bad treatment and raise quality for everyone."

This has been planed for some time, and I understand that it will come into operation some time in 2012, it should if used properly be a most effective tool, and I am sure that it will give alerts to the Care Quality Commission upon which the can act quickly

I AM A LITTLE DISTRESSED ABOUT THIS TO SAY THE LEAST.I AM THINKING THIS HAPPENS A LOT.
YES CARE HOME SHOULD BE MORE REGULATED,THEN THIS MIGHT NOT HAPPEN.
THE ONLY THING THAT IS A WORRY IS THOSE CLIENTS THAT DO NOT HAVE RELATIVES TO SPEAK FOR THEM.

This is a bad idea. While I realise some care homes need to be improved....this is not the way to do it. Trip Advisor reviews are there for all to see, but it doesn't mean what is said is true. Some people will deliberately post bad reviews for whatever reason. These can damage a business, sometimes unfairly. Even good reviews cannot be taken as truth, as a relative or friend is not in a position to know what really makes a good care home. Some people are impressed by fancy furnishings, and could base their review on this. The best way is to go in and assess yourself, by what you see, smell, and your general feeling about the place. Trip Advisor was never meant to be an 'experts' opinion and therefore cannot be used for something as serious as choosing a nursing home.

Your absolutely right, do your own 'smell test' - and many fail on that alone, sadly! But the experience of others can be an important indicator. The problem is more people tend to moan than praise and one must keep that in mind when reading reviews.

And may I ask, who in Gods name will take any notice of what Joe Public says, no government has for the last 25 years at least.

Are they going to do the same for the NHS? North Stafford NHS Trust, amoung others, killed hundreds of pensioners through starvation and neglect.

PCT's have a lot to answer for throughout the country, the ill informed running franchises they are ill equipped to deal with, problems they cannot/will not recognise with answers that are at the best poor and shallow.

As usual in this ruined country, its all about screwing as much money out of Joe Bloggs as they can

At last!! Something that finally makes sense to monitor care homes!! Having worked in the sector for ages it has been shocking to see how some care homes have managed to gain top status on CQC inspections etc. There have been a number of homes I have worked in as an agency worker where I have challenged poor practice or gone home saying I'd never want anyone I know going there...
There are a lot of good homes and very hard working staff but there are also a few places that seem to slip through the net. Although there is an announced and unannounced inspection every year, the homes have an idea when both are due and up the game accordingly, reverting to normal afterwards... while complaints can be made to CQC they are never usually made common knowledge. The way proposed in the article will ensure the homes are permanently be on review and standards should be better and you can be more confident in the service being provided.
