UK Weather: Two Huge Storms In Wait To Pummel Britain As Week Of Awful Weather Looms

Two Massive Storms Ready To Pummel UK As Week Of Awful Weather Looms

Storms and heavy gales are set to pummel the UK as one of the stormiest periods for several years continues.

Weather warnings are in place for southern England ahead of gale-force winds that are expected to arrive overnight on Monday.

The Met Office said that two deep depressions in the Atlantic are likely to turn into storm systems as they reach the UK.

Severe gale force winds of up to 70mph will hit the south coast and the storm will continue into the early hours.

Heavy rainfall will accompany the winds, with up to 60mm falling overnight and the forecaster is also warning of travel disruption.

Temperatures will dip to around 5C but wind chill will make them feel much colder.

Tuesday will see further storms with strong winds and rain hitting Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England. Those storms are not expected to be as strong as the 165mph gusts seen in Scotland during widespread storms last week but the Met Office placed 'yellow' warnings in place.

Yet more heavy winds and rain will affect the UK on Thursday, the Met Office said, as another system of potential storms makes landfall.

Tim Hewson, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, said: "There is some uncertainty in the forecast for later in the week, but there is potential for a significant storm and we are keeping a close eye on the situation as it develops.

"We'll be regularly updating our forecasts and warnings, so we advise everyone to stay up to date with the latest situation."

Hundreds of people in Scotland were still left without power on Sunday after last week's gales. Temperatures dipped to -7.6C in the Highlands and -1.5C in Glasgow as engineers fought to restore access to roads strewn with debris.
