Scottish Independence Support 'Creeping Up', According To Latest Opinion Poll

Scottish Independence Poll

First Posted: 13/12/11 10:58 GMT Updated: 13/12/11 11:23 GMT   PA

Support for independence has increased but still falls short of a majority, according to a poll.

The Ipsos MORI survey suggests 38% of people would vote to take Scotland out of the UK, up three points from a poll in August.

Voters appear to want an early say in the future of the constitution, rather than stick to First Minister Alex Salmond's preferred timetable.

The SNP leader has said the referendum is likely to take place towards the end of this five-year parliamentary session, meaning it could be held in or after 2014.

But 33% of people in the survey want it held as soon as possible, while a further 31% want it within the next two years.

Two questions could feature on the ballot, offering yes-no options on independence or for enhanced powers and responsibility for almost all taxes while remaining in the UK.

Among those saying they are certain to vote, 68% back the second option, known as "devo-max", up one point from August, 28% do not back it and 4% are unsure.

Support for independence is at 38%, while 57% disagree and 5% are still unsure.

The poll follows survey results last week which showed the SNP is twice as popular as Labour.

Mark Diffley, research director at Ipsos MORI, said: "Although our poll last week revealed growing support for the SNP, a clear majority of Scots do not currently support full independence and would prefer to remain part of the UK, albeit with the Scottish Parliament given substantial new powers."

I'm no mathematician, but I think the Polls consistently favour retention of The Union.............:)
Does a mythical 'Independent' Scotland go with the Euro ( hehehe),or retain Sterling ?
If the latter, then The Bank of England set the interest rate.......................;)
I'm afraid Al and chums haven't really thought this through.

Let's get out while we still have some oil left, and become a self sufficient prosperous nation like Norway...................I am sick of being an English province.................Even the Irish catholics should like that idea......................If not, go back to Ireland.

The questions asked in the Ipsos Mori poll were:

As you may know, the Scottish Government plans to hold a referendum on Scotland's constitutional future during the next Scottish Parliament. The referendum is likely to contain two separate questions. The first question will ask whether you agree or disagree with a proposal to extend the powers of the Scottish Parliament to include more laws and duties and all tax-raising powers, while Scotland remains part of the UK. If the referendum was held tomorrow, would you vote to agree or disagree with this proposal?

Agree 68%
Disagree 28%
Don't Know 4%

The second question will ask whether you agree or disagree with a proposal to extend the powers of the Scottish Parliament to enable Scotland to become an independent country, separate from the UK. If the referendum was held tomorrow, would you vote to agree or disagree with this proposal?

Independence 38%
Against 57%
Don't Know 5%

Now then, knowing it was a pejorative term, why did they feel the need to include 'Separate from the UK' in that question? Did they think the respondents would not understand the word independence? Did they purposely set out to get a skewed result for their client?

"Did they purposely set out to get a skewed result for their client? "

He who pays the piper calls the tune.

According to NewsnetScotland.com:

"The poll was tinged with controversy over its use of the pejorative phrase "separate from the UK". The word "separate" has been used by Unionists in their anti-independence campaign literature and polling experts know that its use, in place of the more appropriate "independence", typically results in a lower degree of support."

Therefore the poll was not an honest indication of true support for Scotland restoring independence.

It's similar to Quebec wanting to leave Canada ... except they are not a country unto themselves. And the Bloc Quebecois (a separatist party) have seats nationally. Go figure.

I am English, yet British through and through. Lets not forget its the politicians who try to seperate our nation, the ordinary people get on fine. Scotland may hate the Conservatives, to be blunt I cannot stand any politician, I do not believe any are really interested in the people they serve, all they want is power and wealth.

07:44 PM on 12/13/2011
We don't need any country to adopt us. We are a self sufficient country - which is more than can be said for England.

You should try reading the McRone Report. It is just as relevant now as it was when first published. It states that an independent Scotland would have wealth to an embarrassing degree, whilst England without Scotland subsidising it would end up bankrupt. But then all you Anglo-Saxons already know that - hence the reason for all your snide comments about Scotland. Jealousy is a terrible thing, it brings out the worst in people.

Let the Scots have their referendum and then let us have ours about the EU.

I think it would be great, and while it may be the end of the Union as we know it, it doesn't mean that realations between the two nations would change. I imagine Scottish trade and policies would favor their neighbors to the south.

TAKEN FOR FOOLS, You cannot be independent if you are in the EU dictatorship , The EU Dictates most laws as they do for England. Ireland etc.
05:56 PM on 12/13/2011
Also, by the same doctrine - if Scotland, and England are both Equals within the EU, neither Scotland, nor England need to aspire to a UK Union, since by being consumed under any EU Dictatorship, there is NO POINT in Scotland being held down further still under Cameron's Dictatorship, simply for the sake of keeping a Westminster Controlled UK Union, within a much larger EU Union.
Let's be seeing Scotland having its very own Chair at any EU Table, while looking after the interest of its own People, and likewise as should be England also.

I remember reading some years ago that, if Scotland became independent, Shetland would also want its independence from Scotland in order to keep it's oil. I do not know if that is still the case now the SNP are in power, but the people need to be given all the relevent facts in order to make a decision and not just the ones that are dear to the heart,
05:43 PM on 12/13/2011
"I remember reading some years ago" certainly meets my definition of a fact.

But then again I read the Daily Express.

Shetland and Orkney LEGALLY still belong to Norway - Scotland has had POSSESSION since 1468 but Norway has never ceded soveignty and Shetlanders and Orcadians no more consider themeselves Scots than Channel Islanders consider themselves English .
07:09 PM on 12/13/2011
Despite the aggressive & er `expansionistic` policies of the early middle age imperialistic Kings of Norway and the vikings before them who were also doing their thing on the mainland of Scotland for a few centuries you should know. I think its safe to say that the Orkneys and Shetland are clearly Scottish as they are, you know, right next to us or nearer us in respect to Shetland as opposed to Norway ; ).
Would it have been fair for Norway to have ceceeded the Lofoten Islands if we had decided to cause mishcief over there a thousand years ago?
While its still true that the people of the Shetlands have more of a Norse affinity they are also Scottish in descent too, (as are the faroe islanders incidentally).
The Orcadians are very Scottish.
Anyway the upshot is we are keeping OUR islands that are right in our back yard.
Mkay?

Scotland is a Country that quite rightly cannot stand anything to do with Cameron, or any Tory Governments, therefore we should not be surprise to see that too dump the English Conservatives once and for all, they otherwise are now turning towards thinking about supporting their very own Government at Holyrood more, and more.

Currently, Cameron is carrying out Westminster Coalition Policies ( short of having a Full - Conservative regime In - Charge ), that are fully committed to and aimed at undermining the needs of any Part's of the UK outside of the South - East, and the Home - Counties of England, whereby many People in England, as well as in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and in other places from the Midlands in England heading North are also being left to drift - along with rising Unemployment, and missive Job's losses with Public Sector Budget Cut's, while Cameron and his Cronies spend what Public Taxpayers Cash they do want to spend supporting Bank's, and Bankers in the City of London at the ever expendable cost to the rest of the United Kingdom.

This approach towards everyday Issues while totally ignoring amongst other things Scottish needs, and opinions at the heart of Downing Street, is driving those that have been up to now undecided into the Scottish Independent Camp, since there is, and can be nothing better than to have a fully Independent Scottish Government looking after ALL the Real interest of the Scottish People.

Is Cameron a Conservative - I don't think so. He is a 'liberal conservative' whatever that means

Whatever label is put on Dave C, his politics are rejected by the overwhelming majority of Scots. The last UK GE returned one Tory MP, which is half the number of Pandas we have in Scotland now. The Holyrood election in May this year left them decimated there too.

Salmond must have sold his soul to the Devil to get Cameron as PM.
