Katy Perry has been crowned Artist of the Year by MTV, beating British star Adele despite the latter's greater record sales.

The Firework singer told MTV News: "I wasn't really allowed to watch MTV growing up, so this feels really validating.

"I've had a fantastic year, a great tour and a great run, and you guys have been so a part of it and such a big reason why. I really appreciate it."

2011 has seen Perry secure five number one singles and six top five hits in the US Billboard Top 100.

Amy Doyle, the network's chief of music programming, told AP Perry's achievement of equalling Michael Jackson's record of five number one singles from an album was particularly impressive.

"You just really felt her presence in pop culture throughout the year," Doyle said.

On top of her chart success, Perry has been busy touring the world with her 124-date California Dreams tour, which launched in January and has taken her to five different continents.

Forbes has also named Perry as the third highest-earning woman in music with an estimated income of $44 million (£27.5 million), proving that all her hard work is making a difference to her bank balance, not just her awards mantlepiece.

Who said marrying Russell Brand was a bad idea?
