Comedy stars old and new were honoured with accolades at the 2011 British Comedy Awards.

The ceremony saw gongs given to veteran comic Victoria Wood, who picked up the best female television comic award, as well as the young cast of The Inbetweeners, who were given an outstanding achievement award.

Stewart Lee was one of the main winners of the night, picking up trophies for best male television comic and best comedy entertainment programme during the ceremony at London's Fountain Studios, hosted by Jonathan Ross and screened live on Channel 4.

Miranda Hart, star of the BBC sitcom that bears her first name, had been nominated for four awards and walked away with one - picking up the best comedy actress title for the second year in a row.

She said she was "shell-shocked" to win and had not prepared anything to say in her acceptance speech. Hart said instead of partying the night away, she wanted to "get home as quickly as possible, put the kettle on and get in my onesie".

The viewers' award for queen or king of comedy went to Sarah Millican, who was not at the ceremony but said in a live link-up that she was "thrilled" to receive it.

The best comedy panel show award went to the recently axed Shooting Stars. Dame Helen Mirren presented Have I Got News For You with a lifetime achievement award.

Kylie Minogue presented the cast of The Inbetweeners with the British Comedy Academy outstanding achievement award for their success, which included releasing a film this year.

Darren Boyd, from Smack The Pony, Green Wing and, most recently, for playing John Cleese in Holy Flying Circus, won the best comedy actor award.

Steve Coogan said he was "humbled and honoured" to present the Writers' Guild of Britain Award to The Thick Of It creator Armando Iannucci. He said the Scot, who also devised his Alan Partridge character, had displayed "laser-guided humour" in his career, which began in the 90s.

It is a sad reflection of life in Britain today that our sense of humour has been totally destroyed by those that would drag it down into the gutter with the use of filthy language. It seems that these days a comedian can only get a laugh by swearing and crazily, using the same language on the streets would have them arrested. Yet, it is beamed into all our homes on the TV screen. It's hardly any wonder that our children now use it in every day conversation and think there's nothing wrong with it, it's good, it gets a laugh. That doesn't mean that all modern comedians aren't funny but their use of bad language isn't really neccessary to get a laugh, so why do it? Unfortunately, all the really good comedians are now dead and one wonders whether those that use bad language today will be remembered after they've gone. I think not. The PC Brigade are out there wishing to sensor any comedian that causes perceived offence to minority groups but not since the passing of Mary Whitehouse, has any of them said a word about the moral standards of our comedians? Seems to me that we are all descending into a cesspool of depravity.

Totally agree - I've always maintained the best comedians are those that can make you laugh just by walking onto the stage and not having to say a word!

Get a life!

I have a life and what's more, I don't have to rely on bad language to get a laugh, I think you name says it all though and it's pretty obvious what your priority in life is. However, before you comment on mine, that is my attempt at so called black humour since I am losing my eyesight, so soon I will only have to rely on my hearing. When my lights do finally go out, the last thing I want to hear is swearing all the time on my TV.

It could have been a trick of the mind but did the camera pick up someone sniffing something up the nose? If you recorded it have a look, did I see it or what?????

The best act was the show it's self. Miz Wood where have I been I buy me tv news each week and I never saw her on the tv at all. Has for funny well (not) The produsers must bang their heads together trying to name one funny person. Better to nominate the likes of the old timers Ken Dodd Tommy Copper etc etc etc. Who I am sure would have a thing of gag about this so called funny people.

Naughty boy
Go to the bottom of the class
There are four lines of comment
and SEVEN mistakes
You should have written
itself
Miss or Mrs Wood, where have I been?
I buy my TV news--
As for funny--
producers
Cooper
and you should not start a sentence with Who
and what is a thing of gag?
You probably couldn't give a damn
and typing on the computer keys doesn't help
but I think your comment should get a comedy award of its own!

Now see if you can write it in English.

Why can't people accept that what is funny to one person is not funny to another? We all have different tastes and we should all be tolerant of each others choices of entertainment.
For anyone to say that comedian X is funny and comedian Y is not, is about as ridiculous as people bragging about the fact that their's is the one and only true God....
Why can't we just let everyone one like whatever they like without being slagged off and lambasted?

I couldn't agree more. What is the point of these people who create a "comedy character", but then are incapable of appearing as themselves? This was an awards dinner, yet he still had to be in character. Harry Hill is, or was, the same. They even go on talk-shows as the character - it's a bit pathetic.
12:36 PM on 12/17/2011
Stewart Lee? You're having a laugh, surely?
Or rather, if you watch him, you're almost certainly not!!!
02:57 PM on 12/17/2011
Best stand up in history. Hands down.
03:24 PM on 12/17/2011
"in history"??
You must have a very limited view of stand-up comedy. It's been around for a very long time and I seriously doubt that he is the best there's ever been.
12:27 PM on 12/17/2011
these people are not in any way amusing, they are part of a clique of tat that appear on every cheap tv show that has an audience standing up out of there seats cheering and screaming and clapping their hands over their heads.

It's strange to have a pic of Rik Mayall and then not even mention him.
