Philippines Flood: Majority Of Dead Victims Children, Says Save The Children

Aid agencies are continuing their emergency response in the Philippines where deadly flash floods claimed the lives of more than 430 people.

Organisations including Save the Children have relief teams on the ground after a tropical storm reached landfall at night and wrought havoc.

Southern cities such as Iligan and Cagayan de Oro on Mindanao Island had 12 hours of sustained rainfall, causing landslides, rivers to burst their banks and sending walls of water crashing down mountain slopes into homes.

Save the Children said it understood the majority of the dead victims were children, and that they were concerned about youngsters who had become separated from their parents. Hundreds of people were also missing in the aftermath of the disaster amid fears that the death toll will rise once response teams reach outlying areas.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) had already advised Britons against travelling to the region due to terrorist fears and in the wake of the floods urged anyone in the area to contact friends and relatives.

Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne said: "The loss of life by flooding in the Philippines is tragic. I visited the Philippines earlier this month and know how keenly this loss will be felt by all its people. I would like to express my sincere condolences to the families and friends of those affected. My thoughts are with them and the government of the Philippines as they lead the recovery work."

An FCO spokeswoman said they were not aware of any British deaths or casualties.

As the flood waters rose, tens of thousands of people sought shelter on high ground, and thousands of soldiers, backed by emergency teams, were mobilised to help clear coastal cities.

Philippine Red Cross secretary general Gwen Pang said on Saturday night that 436 people had so far been declared dead, mainly in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro. Ms Pang told the Press Association: "We are expecting to receive a higher number of people who have died because we haven't reached many areas yet. Not only that, but the floods have damaged properties and livelihoods. We are appealing for support because the need for help is really great on the ground."

Save the Children's country director in the Philippines Anna Lindenfors said: "Children who have survived this disaster will be hungry, frightened and exhausted. We are especially worried about children who may have been separated from their parents during the flooding, as rains continue to fall and there is a very real risk of landslides causing further damage."

I am British but spend much of my time in Davao City, Mindanao. I am also a member of the Rotary Club of South Davao. I am co-ordinating an appeal on behalf of the Rotary Club to raise money to help the disaster victims. If you want to donate and to be certain that all the money donated will reach the needy and not end up in some corrupt government officials bank account then check out the website www.rcsd.ph and make a donation with your credit card and paypal. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas, many wont.

I always donate to veteran groups, which weekly have a table outside the grocery store in the small town I live in (two traffic lights, one grocery store, a post office, Ace hdwr, a library, one bank, McD's & Burger King). A couple of weeks ago I asked the man, with the table and little American flags, what branch he served with and he replied that he'd never been in the service. Asked how he got in with a Veteran's group and was told he was with an independent fund raising group that gave a portion of what they collected to a Veteran's group! When asked, he said he had no idea what percentage went to Veterans. I will no longer donate to groups unless they can show they are legitimate.

As a retired Vet, I can tell you about this. The VA, VFW, A Legion, Salvation Army, and Wounded Warriors, all give 100% of every penny collected. No employees. All volunteers.
Believe it or not, the American Red Cross and United Way are two of the worst. ARC CEO made $565,000 last year alone! United Way eats up almost 82% od every penny given as admin costs. This is all verifiable. The VFW, ALegion, are great. 99% of the time, you can tell the guy sitting there is a Vet by just looking and talking to him. Any doubts, just send a check to the Natl Hdqtrs.

I come from a family with many members in the Service, brothers retired, nephews and nieces active, father & father-in-law of course. I know Wounded Warriors and Am Legion are great. Sometimes the table outside is obviously manned by Vets but this time it was just a private fund-raising org which probably gives the minimum to be legal to Vets. I was pis*ed because that is trying to deceive people so now I check carefully. Never give to United Way or Red Cross, not only does little get to the needy compared to what they raise, I have my preferred charities. Thank you for your service to America.

Just a thought after reading your name. I have a nephew who is a Ranger, went through Ranger school/training, was sent to Afghanistan two or three times. No one else in the family is or has been a Ranger, (Navy, Coast Guard, reg career Army, reg career Air Force, and Marines but no Rangers or Seals in our family) He is a medic in the Rangers. I say that is still a Ranger; some family members say he is "just" a medic. I don't want to ask my niece or her mother because they might think I don't believe he is a real Ranger. If you were a Ranger you can answer this. Thanks.

I grew up in Iligan and I still have my family and friends there and they are well but some of my family's friends did not and most were whole family killed by the flood. I would appreciate it very much not to make any negative comments for they are suffering and in shock. My sister told me that her friend lost his wife and daughter and was holding to on to his other daughter while looking for them when he realized that his daughter was getting heavy and she died in his arms and he could not let go and sat on the edge of the road looking shock and lost. So please no evil comments ok.

Here in the USA there is a "GOD " phenonema going on. Indeed a prominent NFL quarterback, TEBOW, now kneels and prays to GOD whenever he needs or scores a touch down, and the media says that it seems to be working; incredivble, could the Pope do better ?

In contrast, its ironic to say the least that over 500 people, many children perished in this horrific fllood and God was there, many on this blog believe that.
So pray, please justify or explain the selective process here? Is a touchdown worth more than the lives of some 500 human beings, same GOD; think people, think.
RIP.

These are good strong God believing people over there....they live much closer to god than you will ever have hope to....when he calls you, may he have mercy on your soul...........

You apparently have a problem with your reading comprehension skills . You have no way of knowing the content of Mr. Tebow's prayers, and I've seen nothing in the media to suggest his prayers are "working." Any observer can see that he prays and that he's a skillfull football player.

Ugh, it makes me sick to my stomach when I hear about natural disaster claiming the lives of people like this. I can't even fathom the heartache of losing a loved one like that :(

The disaster that claimed so far 436 dead in the Philippines is a reminder that only God knows the reason for it.
11:21 PM on 12/18/2011

Dumaguete City, where I grew up, was hit hard too, but nowhere near as hard as Iligan and Cagayan, from what the news shows. And having been born and raised in the Philippines, I can understand the reluctance to send aid, knowing full well that most, if not all, the money ends up in the hands of corrupt people. But by blocking off the thought of not giving is abandoning any religion's tenet of charity simply because of the fear of not reaching the people who need the aid.

Because of what I know, I donate to the Red Cross, where I feel confident that I am donating to an organization that has the manpower, resources and the institutional ethics to be entrusted with funds that will make the most impact on this calamitous situation.

It does not have to be the Red Cross; just do the due diligence before donating to a relief organization to make sure your hard earned money goes where your generous heart intended it to go.

God Bless You All during this Season of Giving!!!

I was in Cagayan de Oro for a few days back in '99, nice town with light traffic. Refreshing break from the heavy trafic, dirt and noise of Cebu City. We didn't say long, too many muslims there for comfort, Davao City is much better, (was there recently). Just stay far away from the Zamboanga area, home of the Abu Sayef, (directly linked with al Qaida).

Wonderful people there, my wife is from Bayugan Tres, Central Mindinao....when I go we travel alot, but my wife never tells anyone when or where. She wakes us up and hop in a van....we always cram 10 to 15 in a 9 person van. But no one complains, just happy to be together...and not walking!!! Pray for the people there......

We have a friend who is a Catholic priest in the Philippines, and the church does A LOT of good works for the poor. This man is a saint and is beloved in the Philippines people. Stop blaming my church!!!!! Please.

I wonder if its the same guy who wouldnt fix a spelling error on a baptismal without me paying him a bribe,,,while we were sitting in his GOLD plated office,,,,and then 10 feet out his door people were living in cardboard boxes,,,your belovid church wont even alow people to use condoms,,,,their afraid if people quit having un wanted babies there wont be a future income for the church, I hope some day they will realize that they can rely on them self and not on some story book.

Firstly most people in the world, have NO concept of how poor some people in the Philippines are,i do as i have visited many times over the last 15 years, they do need help, but on the other side there are many very, very, rich people who live there,SM owners,Jolibee, etc who can help the victims, also the sickening corruption that is rife there, the rich get richer the poor poorer, hopefully some relief people can get funds to the right place with out others helping them selfs, god bless them.

been there many times since 1975 and your so right,i find the only way to help is to hand over individually, we do that.

What wonderful news for Save the Children! This should be good for business.
07:23 PM on 12/18/2011
You got it absolutely right,,,If you want something,,all you have to do is say CHILDREN,,I have been there 100 times and my 2 kids are there and I love the PH,,,but I wont give one peso to any aid group period,,,,I just hange out at the hospitals and listen to people who cant pay for medical help, and thats when I help, then i know it actualy got in someones hand.
