A 37-year-old man has drowned after falling through ice on a fresh water loch as he tried to rescue his dog.

Strathclyde Police said his body was recovered from the Gadloch in Lenzie after an extensive search involving divers and a police helicopter.

Police were called to the incident in East Dunbartonshire at around 5pm on Sunday with ambulance and fire and rescue services.

The body was recovered around 7.30pm. The dog also drowned.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue had three crews from Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs and Clydesmill at the incident.

They used a rigid inflatable boat to conduct a search of the loch, using a thermal image camera to locate any heat sources under the water.

Working with the police helicopter they swept the shore line of the loch and identified the location where the man fell into the water.

The rescue team warned of the dangers that open water areas present, urging people to keep pets on a lead around frozen water and to avoid attempts at rescuing animals on ice.

The Gadloch is often used for curling in winter as thick ice covers the surface, but police said there was only a small and unstable covering of ice on the loch at the time.

Police said investigations are continuing but they believe it was an accident and there were no suspicious circumstances.

A tragedy - but I would like to think I'd do the same if I had a pet. What a brave man.
