Falklands: UK Government Warns Argentina Over Attempt To 'Isolate' Disputed Islands

The government today warned Argentina not to doubt its "determination" to protect the Falklands after a South American trading bloc announced a ban on boats with an islands flag from docking at its ports.

The foreign office said it was "very concerned" by the "latest Argentine attempt to isolate" the islands and is now in "urgent" discussions with countries in the region.

Mercosur, a trading bloc that includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, reached the decision at a summit in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo.

Former foreign office minister Denis MacShane said the move was aimed at London and blamed the coalition for weakening Britain's international standing.

The Labour MP said: "This hostile action is aimed at London not the Falklands.

"South American leaders know that Britain has fewer friends than ever before because of David Cameron's isolationist approach in Europe and the indifference to the Obama administration as most cabinet members are close to US neo-Cons.

"Brazil and other countries know that thanks to Liam Fox's defence cuts the UK no longer has aircraft carrier capability so British maritime power projection has been fatally weakened by the Government."

Uruguayan president Jose Mujica said solidarity among South America's neighbours was key to his country's foreign policy.

He added: "For the moment, this means accepting that this territory is a colonial British position in our America."

The dispute involves a vast area of potentially mineral-rich South Atlantic waters and has created a fresh diplomatic headache for Britain, which controls the islands.

A foreign office spokesman said: "We are very concerned by this latest Argentine attempt to isolate the Falkland Islands people and damage their livelihoods, for which there is no justification.

"It is not immediately clear what practical impact, if any, this statement will have, which mirrors the language already used by the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) in 2010. We are discussing this urgently with countries in the region.

"But no one should doubt our determination to protect the Falkland Islanders' right to determine their own political future."

Uruguayan president Jose Mujica said solidarity among South America's neighbours was key to his country's foreign policy.

He added: "For the moment, this means accepting that this territory is a colonial British position in our America."

Mr Mujica said British-flagged civilian ships that may supply the islands would be allowed to use its ports, but not military vessels.

Argentina's foreign minister Hector Timerman, whose country claims the Falklands as its own territory, thanked him for taking the position.

The Mercosur decision is the latest in a series by Latin American regional bodies designed to show solidarity with Argentina, which calls the islands Las Malvinas.

Roger Spink, president of the Falklands Chamber of Commerce, said they were a small community and felt increasingly under blockade. He told the BBC: "If we were Palestine, the European Union would be up in arms."

Last week Uruguay said it was banning ships flying the Falkland Islands flag from its ports, prompting the foreign office to call on Uruguay's ambassador in London to explain the move.

The sabre-rattling over the Falkland Islands must stop now! Neither of our countries have anything to gain from it. Argentina has to be respected for the tremendous progress it has made on human rights since the fall of the junta in the wake of the 1982 war and therefore I would be happy to cut them some slack over the mineral and oil reserves off the islands but the islands themselves will remain British by the wishes of the people who live there. Until this nonsense stops there can be no negotiation. Both Britain and Argentina have cut their military and Argentina is a major player in peace keeping as a NATO ally (something which we appreciate) so war is not an option. Negotiate NOW!

''We have no way of defending these islands''. | credible ststement only if you have no ideas whatsoever about the discrepancy between British and Argenitinian military power in the area. Perhaps, The Truth you would like to envisage for our amusement a scenario whereby Argentina mounts an amphibious invasion which negates our submarine forces and Eurofighter umbrella. Have they perhaps developed an awesome superweapon in secret that is powered by wishful thinking and fires rhetoric...with hot air as a byproduct.

Has that woman with the rubber lips and the inflatable chest commented on this yet?

I want to hear what she has to say.

Don't be daft.

It was the Thatcher government's incompetent oversight of the Falkland Islands that gave the Argentine Junta the green light to invade in the first place.

Fortunately, these days, the Argentine military now consists of a couple of converted tug boats, six Land Rovers and a hot air balloon, so we should be OK if the Latin machismo ever goes beyond the spitting and shouting stage again.

Since their return to democracy after the Falkland's War Argentina has cut it's military spending and abolished conscription. Furthermore Argentina is now a partner of NATO and in 1991 they were the only South American country to assist in the removal of Saddam Hussein from Kuwait in the first Gulf War. Argentina's military is involved in several peace-keeping commitments around the world, particularly in Kosovo. Their army also own nine British built armoured personal carriers (although I do not know whether they purchased them before or after 1982.). Because of the state of both of our armed forces and our commitments war between our two nations will be stupid and futile.

Argentina has less chance of taking the islands by force now than it did in the eighties. The Eurofighter contingent alone could destroy any amphibious attempt they could mount piecemeal.

The idea is a s grotesque as thier ''claim'' to land that has been British since before Argentina was a nation. In whose name is this claim made? Certainly not the indigenous Southern American population that they slaughtered.

The Falklands is a convenient stick for mashing Argentianina minds whenever their governmnet decides things are going south. This is just noise and bluster from those who, now, can offer nothing else.

If they go ahead with this, then the World Bank needs to step in and make them all pay back their loans as its against the rules of free trade.

come on camroon what you going to do about that then give the falklands away

Get a manned aircraft base built on the Falklands & a nuclear sub offshore Argentina.

We do have RAF Mount Pleasant with 4 based Typhoon's on the Falkland's and I believe that we do have an SSN in the area.......

if the mps wont to keep the falklands let them go and live there and leave us alone, like the falklands no-one would miss them.

I wouldn't be averse to selling them. Unfortunately, they aren't ours to sell.

The only people who have anything like a legal claim to the governance of the islands are the indigenous population (bollox to UN resolution this, and declaration that).

This how Cameron responds to peaceful 'political' moves by foreign nations! Issue threats! Next he will be orderng a no fly zone as an excuse to bomb South America?
Lets be honest islands 8,000 miles from Briton are not British. History shows that the Spanish claimed these Island then Argentine International Law is, as in the case of Israel and Palestine, that a country winning a war cannot claim sovereignty over occupied land!!!

"Argentine International Law"

An interesting concept.

We used to 'own' Australia, a rather long way from these shores.
07:11 PM on 12/21/2011
Well, lots of countries have sovereignty over islands many miles away from their own shores, look at Greece and Turkey, the Canary Islands, Jersey and Guernsey, I'm sure there must be many more, Spain even has two cities in Morocco under Spanish control, So if we are forced to give up our interests in The Falklands then any country that supports that loss should be forced to give up any lands that are not immedatley off their own shores.

Its got nothing to do with our veto against the EU. This angst has been going on for decades and its already lead to a war in which Argentine was defeated.

Trust Labour Europhiles to put this slant on things to exacerbate matters and create more trouble. Argentine is a British protectorate and as far as the Islanders wish, and it will stay that way unless they wish otherwise democratically, whatever tub thumbing Argentine makes.

At a summit today (In the house) I decided to stop eating corned beef until they rescind their decision. That will cost them!

I've got three Fray Bentos pies left which I keep for (drunken) emergencies.

I won't throw them out, but it's back to kebabs and Chinese takeaways when they're gone.

Great stuff Willie, I too have a penchant for the pies but they give me indigestion! Can't fault the kebab option! The chinese will only lead to use of the pies as they can cook in 35 minutes!

You need to support our loyal ALLIES in your choice of fuel for staving off the drunk munchies! You'r OK with the kebabs I guess, but you need to think again on the Chinese.

Maybe a nice Pizza?

Back in the 1970s a lot of people were put off eating Argentinian corned beef for life after it was found to be the source of a typhoid epedemic.
As to meat pies, Hollands of Baxedales are the best IMO, based on lamb, the sustained me through the BSE scares

Although I think we have all gone seriously 'Off topic' here; I couldn't afford pies in the seventies. I haven't got typhoid, but no chance of BSE either!
A good pate on toast is a godsend!
