The line between the genre and literary novel has always been a transient one, and recently there has been a trend of literary novelists turning their hand to explicitly genre novels.

The reason is perhaps a combination of literary novels experiencing relatively poor sales while fantasy, sci fi and horror continue to enjoy commercial success, and the growing literary prowess of genre novelists, such as China Meiville, who make the transition more palatable for serious authors.

What, no Kingley Amis, who made a point of attempting different genres - and not just to satirise them, which was what Jane Austen was up to in Northhanger Abbey. Not always to best effect perhaps, but full marks for trying.

Literary fiction IS a genre of fiction.
