Tony Blair Spinal Tap: 'I'd Play Nigel Tufnel' Says Former PM

Can Blair Go One Louder?

Former prime minister Tony Blair has revealed his dream film role - playing dopey guitarist Nigel Tufnel in mockumentary This is Spinal Tap.

The character, played by actor Christopher Guest, is famous for his outrageous guitar playing and dim-witted ways.

Mr Blair said the 1984 comedy, directed by Rob Reiner, was the film he should have starred in.

He told Total Film magazine: "Some might say Dumb And Dumber but given my hopelessly unsuccessful aspirations as a rock star it should be This Is Spinal Tap. I'd play Nigel."

In a famous scene from the film about the spoof rockers, Tufnel tells film maker Marty DiBergi, played by Rob Reiner, about his amplifiers that go up to 11 and are "one louder" than usual amplifiers.

Mr Blair said his favourite film was the classic tale of wartime intrigue, Casablanca, and also revealed a "fondness" for Norman Wisdom.

He said: "Norman always played this working class guy who upsets the toffs, so in fact they were very funny social commentaries on British society."

But he said he had never seen either The Special Relationship or The Deal, in which he is played by Michael Sheen.

He said: "I'm not one for political movies as I get enough of it in my daily life. If I was going to watch something about politics, I'm more likely to watch Yes, Prime Minister."
