Nigeria: Bomb Explodes Outside Church Near Capital, Death Toll At Least 25

Christmas Mass In Nigeria Targeted By Terror

A Christmas service in Nigeria was targeted by terror on Sunday as a bomb exploded outside a Church in an attack by Islamist group Boko Haram.

There have been two other reported attacks in the country.

At the scene of the explosion in St. Theresa Church there were reports that there were not enough ambulances to evacuate those injured.

"There are casualties, but we can't talk about figures for now," a spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency said.

It comes amid a wave of sectarian violence in the country, and a warning from the US embassy in Nigeria to be "particularly vigilant" around churches and large crowds.

In 2010 Christmas Eve bombings by the same grooup, Boko Haram, killed 32..

On Christmas Eve 2011, AP reported that clashes between Boko Haram and the police had left 61 dead.

Foreign Secretary William Hague said: “I condemn today’s bomb attacks in or near churches in Nigeria. These are cowardly attacks on families gathered in peace and prayer to celebrate a day which symbolises harmony and goodwill towards others. I offer my condolences to the bereaved and injured.“
