Cancer Patients 'Relying On Charity Handouts To Pay Fuel Bills'

Cancer patients are becoming increasingly reliant on charity handouts to heat their homes as they struggle to pay rising fuel bills, newly-published figures have shown.

Macmillan Cancer Support said it had made one-off payments totalling £2,548,563 to 12,669 cancer patients to help with fuel costs during 2011, a sharp increase on the 7,369 patients needing similar help just five years ago.

The charity, which issued fuel grants of around £1.4 million in 2006, is calling for an ongoing independent review of fuel poverty - which was commissioned by the government - to prioritise cancer patients for help.

Commenting on the rise in charity payments announced by Macmillan, its campaign manager, Laura Keely, said: "To feel too scared to put the heating on because of soaring energy bills is an unacceptable reality for thousands of vulnerable cancer patients who feel the cold more and spend long periods of time at home.

"When the charity was established 100 years ago, founder Douglas Macmillan helped cancer patients by handing out sacks of coal to keep them warm.

"It is shocking that a century on, people who are diagnosed with this devastating disease are still relying on charity help to heat their freezing homes."

Studies have shown that seven in 10 cancer patients aged under 55 lose income after being diagnosed, often because they are too ill to work.

However, their bills often rise because they need to spend more time at home and feel the chill more because of their treatment.

Research conducted for Macmillan into fuel poverty has also established that certain groups of cancer patients are particularly vulnerable to fuel poverty, including those on housing benefit and council tax benefit or with a low annual household income.

Sad that people with cancer have to suffer any pains at all ,financial is one of the worst because the system works against those who have the disease.

WHEN WILL YOU LEARN??
The polititians are merely the 'front men' for the establishment. They are told what to do by the grey men who rarely/never speak in public. It doesn't matter which party is in power, the grey men decide what is going to happen to us and it is the responsibility of the polititians to interpret these decisions in words which the public will understand. While doing so they receive high salaries/expenses paid for by us because THEY are the only people to whom we have public access! In other words, if there were NO polititians the country would carry on using the edicts issued, as now, by the grey men using the current paper-work which are issued via the various laws/statutes/statements which can be found hidden in the parliamentary records. The result is the ignorance of the dire needs of poor people such as these.
THIS is called DEMOCRACY!!!
By the way, can someone tell me who runs the men in grey? I've got a pretty good idea.

My husband has cancer. He received a medical exemption card, so he no longer pays for his medication. Other than this, he receives NOTHING! Not a penny in Incapacity Benefit, income support, DLA, NOTHING We had an eighty mile round trip in our old banger 5 days a week for 5 weeks whilst he had radiotherapy, even had to pay £1.70 per visit to park at the cancer hospital!! Our heating is OFF & we will not be going out to any sales!
Out of our pension we pay full council tax & £230 in fuel EVERY MONTH
As we have NO money we have switched off the heating We applied for a Council Tax rebate but we have to wait for the council to VISIT US and check who we are and that we are ill/disabled (their officers are more qualified in this than the NHS!) We may be entitled to either a 25% disability discount or rebate due to income, we have been waiting since July For eight months we have eaten: porridge for breakfast - beans on toast for lunch - evening meal, usually cabbage, green beans, potatoes, pasta & pesto; with one large pot lasting us for up to four days NO cakes, sweets, puddings, fruit, ice cream NOTHING ELSE just the bare basics to keep us alive! We are both very skinny, anaemic and of course ill !!!
Are we "all in this together"?? If so, why is everyone else is fatter & richer than

Grannygill, I've been through cancer with a spouse, but faced nothing like you are going through.  I won't second-guess you or give advice, but I want you to know my prayers are with you...I hope someone reads this who can help.
11:19 PM on 12/27/2011
Grannygill I am so sorry. Reading your post actually made me cry. I really hope things improve for you both. Life is sometimes so unfair.

Granny knows it and so do I, there's no help whatsoever. As she still pays council tax she must have either a very good pension or savings, till this comes down to the required threshold she'll have no option but to pay, her best bet is a solicitor or citizens advice to gift her ott savings to offspring which will dispose of the council tax bill. CA can probably help to get the council tossers into gear too, the trouble with this country is that if you don't know how to work the system it shafts you after paying your dues for a lifetime. Although we are now skint our savings went much the same way as this ladies, if not for the wife being invalided out of the civil service and being led through her claims we'd be in the same boat, besides that and even though it was the jobcentre she was invalided out of DWP have stopped benefits on numerous occasions for us although they know there'll be no recovery. Another destitute scrounger here, roll on the revolution.

Well, except if they need a specific cancer drug; with that postcode lottery the odds of getting say Avast are pretty low.

When £billions are being spent on immigrants and foreigners taking British jobs, then many will have to suffer thanks to the Labour party and now the Coalition.
06:02 PM on 12/27/2011
It is a disgrace that cancer suffers need charity to pay their bills. But they are not the only ones. I deliver meals on wheels to the elderly and see first hand the conditions in which some live and also cannot afford to keep warm.

Keep saying it, we get who we vote for and neither tory or labour give a toss about the voters, it makes no odds to them, either in power or opposition, they still have a well paid cushy number, whilst we stand there like a cow being "milked".

My question to the GOP...Who are you people??????
05:26 PM on 12/27/2011
Unacceptable!. Who have we become. When did the fortunate beome better than the rest of us? When did those in power decide people were expendible/disposable? When do we stand up for our brother/sister and say ENOUGH? Hopefully sooner as opposed to later....

RE-NATIONALIZE the utilities so we are not constantly getting shafted. What makes you laugh is they keep saying energy prices are going up, yet I can remember watching a documentary on discovery about one of russia's gas fields and they CLEARLY stated that " even tho they hadn't completed building the processing plant, they had already sold 1/2 if not 2/3 of the reserve already" the reserve could run the whole of europe for 60+ years" Your not tell me that british gas doesn't book gas supplies for at least 5 years supplies in advance (if not more)

The biggest problem is the middle men that are buying the commodities and sitting on them. They don't actually do anything. The only reason oil took a dive recently is because all these banks that had financial problems and were all but bankrupt had to sell all these "sit on commodities" quickly and effectively "flood" the market to get some quick cash.

Why do you think GOLD prices have suddenly gone through the roof. Not because the electronics people need them (because they need low alpha gold for electronics) it's because the commodity people / banks are buying as much gold in as they can.

It is unbelievable what suffering this government has imposed on these people. Yet if you are a large organisation you can make a deal to avoid paying your full tax bill.

Let me tell you this: my sister in law had breast cancer that involved the removal of her breast, she was very ill and as my brother had died 4 years previously, she had no one to rely on and couldn't afford to heat her house properly!! This was under the last Labour Government. They are all the same couldn't care less about the avarage person, so don't give me a load of rubbish blaming it on to one government!! We couldn't help much because we are pensioners, struggling ourselves.
04:42 PM on 12/27/2011
yeah you're right, none of our government give a toss, especially if your not making a contribution
03:54 PM on 12/27/2011
No countries would send us aid!
03:52 PM on 12/27/2011
It not just cancer patients! Mentally ill etc! Govt. prefers to fund wars for oil / contracts later! & send aid to other countries! Their own backyard can can do one! Great Britain!

Scrap the 5% VAT on domestic fuel bills - that will be a start and help pay for it by not paying the Winter Fuel Allowance to pensioners who are living on the Costa Del Sol and other warm climates.
