Breast Implant Risks Under Review

Breast Implants

First Posted: 31/12/11 15:33 Updated: 31/12/11 15:40   PA

The government today announced a review of risks to thousands of women from faulty breast implants fitted by a French company.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley expressed concern that existing evidence about potential dangers was not reliable.

Around 40,000 women in Britain are believed to have had silicone implants made by Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), including hundreds who underwent reconstructive breast surgery through the NHS.

The French authorities shut down PIP last year after the company was found to be using cheaper industrial silicone. Paris has since recommended that women have the prosthetics removed because of fears over rupture.

However, the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has previously indicated that its data suggests the risk of rupture is only 1%, rather than the 3.6% estimated by France. There is also no evidence of cancer links, and on that basis it has said removal is not necessary.

Speaking this morning, Mr Lansley said NHS Medical Director, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, would now be carrying out a review of the situation.

The MHRA will also be conducting an audit of its evidence to resolve concerns about the "content and quality of the data that cosmetic surgery providers are sharing with the regulator".

"We are doing everything we can to ensure that women with these implants get the best possible advice," Mr Lansley said.

"So far, all the evidence from around the world suggests that women should not be worried and that there have not been abnormal levels of problems reported with these implants. But if any woman is worried, then they should contact their surgeon or GP.

"We have, however, received data from an organisation yesterday that was not previously acknowledged or communicated to the MHRA.

"The validity of this data still requires full assessment and evaluation, so I have asked Professor Sir Bruce Keogh to lead an urgent investigation so that we can establish exactly what has happened and whether we need to improve the regulatory regime.

"I want to reassure women that if any new data comes to light which calls into question the safety of these implants, we will act swiftly to help them. Our top priority is making sure that women get the correct advice so that they are kept safe."

Simple, those who had breast implants on medical grounds should recieve the required medical treatment needed to rectify the problem. Those who were stupid enough to spend a fortune on trying to change what nature gave them, through their own vanity, should get together and sue the French. After all, it's a French product, so why should British tax payers have to pay?

Don't people ever learn! Even back in the eighties, my dear Mum always advised us to remove the PIPs !

As a tax payer I don't mind paying for this implant removal. After all £1000 000s of our money is being sent as aid, to cash rich countries who are working on space exploration programs etc. countries like India and Pakistan.

What a load of ignorant rants from people who do not understand the position of a very significant proportion of these women. A large number of these implants were for reconstructive surgery following mastectomies to combat breast cancer. The implants are potentially very dangerous.

I find such attitudes disgraceful and sickening.

As far as I can see no one is saying women who have it done for medical reasons shouldn't have them removed by NHS. But why should the taxpayer pay for those who had it done for cosmetic reasons? The NHS can barely afford to treat people who are ill throgh no fault of there own . Can you imagine how much it would cost to remove them form 40,000 women? It should be funded by other means.

I can understand and sympathise with any women who have had these things fitted by the nhs and they should be given prcise and accurate information and even if possible have them repalced but i have no sympathy at all for women through vanity have paid to have larger breasts, they should not get a penny towards having them removed or replaced as they were not necessary, if they bleat on about it sue the french for the money but if they can affored to waste money for bigger breasts then let them use more of their own money having them fixed or do what most women do and get on in life with what they were born with. My own personal point of view is women with large or over large breasts look ugly.

I was always of the opinion that more than a mouthful is a waste.
Nipples are made for suckling children, breast is best.
Any additional benefits are just that, additional.
22:08 on 31/12/2011
What a stupid comment!
01:42 on 01/01/2012
What is stupid about the comment?
Nipples are for our babies, the way we feed them milk,
Is that stupid or are nipples just there for men?

There is no way that I should have to pay for these women to have further surgery. They could afford to pay when it was cosmetic, surely they can now pay when it is health related. They knew the risks of surgery when they decided to have the implants. For the taxpayer to pay for 40,000 women to have the implants removed and repair/corrective surgery would presumably cost around £15k each. That would make a bill for the taxpayer of £600,000,000. They must pay themselves.

Couldn't have said it better.
22:46 on 31/12/2011
They did not know this risk. No-one knew this risk except the surgery providers. That is what the story is about.
20:39 on 31/12/2011
not all breast surgery is for vanity reasons
22:06 on 31/12/2011
True, sympathetic to those who have it done for medical reasons,
This comment has been removed.

No sympathy whatsoever. Women have become too obsessed with physical looks, 'celebrity culture' springs to mind as a blame factor. People shouldn't mess with their bodies like that.

I assume the restorative work will be carried out on the National Health,at vast expense. The women had them fitted privately should return to the doctors that fitted them Its the same with teeth fitted abroad, when they go wrong they end up in HNS hospitals getting the work sorted.

40,000 women at risk and your answer is to shrug and say 'it's not my problem'.

Happy New Year.
20:03 on 31/12/2011
It isn't our problem!

I have ME (I don't suppose you even know what that is) and there are at least 250,000 sufferers in the UK alone who get very little help from the NHS so why do think you should?

Do you expect all the women to have their artifically enhanced breasts fixed on the NHS? Maybe they should stop other urgently needed operations going ahead simply to fix their problem. Most of these women had the operation for cosmetic reasons, those that had it for medical reasons ,eg,breast restoration due to cancer would not be affected as a different manufactor was used.Their operation would have been insured by the doctors, let the insurance companies sort it out.So yes,its not my problem that so many women ,due to feeling inadaquate, have a cosmetic operation that does nothing but give them a "feel good" feeling

Are there any job openings for any enthusiastic amatures? I'm not a surgeon but I don't mind having a good look for you.
