We are very sorry to say that, yes, it did in fact mean something that Russell Brand spent Christmas in England while his wife of 14 months spent it in Hawaii. Trust us, we're just as shocked as you.
Yesterday lawyers for the 36-year-old Brand filed divorce papers in a Los Angeles superior court. Given Russell's colourful past the very generic 'irreconcilable differences' citing on the filing sounds a bit plain, but we're pretty sure Katy Perry prefers it to fraud.
In case you are holding out hope that this is just a slow news day rumour, Russell Brand has in fact confirmed the split. In a statement released on Friday the comedian said "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends". A far less passionate statement than he made only 28 days ago when he responded to rumours that his marriage was over on the US chat show 'Ellen'. At the time Brand said, 'I'm really happily married. I'm married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge. I'm still alive.'
We can't imagine Katy's famously religious parents are taking the news too well, but perhaps they can take some comfort in the Brand-Perry union having last longer than 72 days.
