Olympics 2012: Austerity Calls Will Be Ignored, Says Jeremy Hunt

The Government will ignore calls for an "austerity Olympics" and instead use the event to help kick-start the economy, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt has indicated.

Mr Hunt said hosting the Games during the worldwide slowdown was an "incredible stroke of luck" as it would be a "huge plus sign" for UK plc.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, he also insisted demonstrators would be tolerated as long as their protests were legitimate and lawful.

Ministers have faced demands for spending on the Olympics to be pared back in recognition of drastic efforts to tackle the deficit.

But Mr Hunt said voters would not forgive the coalition if it did not "make the most" of an unprecedented opportunity.

"You can take two attitudes to the Olympics," he said. "You can say: these are times of austerity and therefore we should pare them down as much as possible. Or, you can say: because these are times of austerity we need to do everything we possibly can to harness the opportunity of the Olympics.

"We're going to be the centre of global attention and it will be the first time that we've had a major sporting event that's watched live by half the world's population. People would not forgive us if we didn't make the absolute most of this moment.

"This is going to be an incredible expression of Britain's culture, Britain's history and Britain's creativity. So, we decided that the sensible thing to do is to make sure that we finance it properly."

The Government has contributed more than £9 billion for the London Games and there is still more than £500 million unallocated in "contingency" funds.

Earlier this week, Mayor of London Boris Johnson praised the 1948 austerity post-war Olympics in London, when athletes travelled by bus and other countries donated items.

However, Mr Hunt insisted the Olympics were vital for the economy.

Asked if they could be the difference between entering a double-dip recession and not, Mr Hunt replied: "I don't want to overstate that because there are many other factors ... but if you are saying, 'Will the Olympics have a massively positive impact on our economic confidence?' I think the answer is resoundingly yes."

He said the Olympics were bound to be targeted by protesters but, unlike at the 2008 Beijing Games, they would be treated with "dignity".

"We are proud to be a democratic country and protest is part of that tradition," he said. "We don't want to see disruption to the Games but we also recognise part of the package of Britain is that we allow protest providing it's lawful and legitimate."

I have long suspected Britain were the mugs in accepting the award (reward !!) of the Olympics. In such troubled economic times nobody could afford the spectacle as achieved in years past. The economic rewards fall only on a small sector of the populace. A terrorist threat, never mind an incident, will see an exodus from Heathrow of panic proportions.

I do wonder what a non-London poll might throw up as regards how the general public feel over this monumental waste of resources.

profits go to the sponsors, the general public will pay for it through taxes and put up with the inevitable delays and inconveniences because we have no choice.

Never mind a non-London poll - if you polled Londoners (by which I mean, ones who actually live and work here) my estimate is that 80% would be firmly against it. Of all my acquaintance, I know of only one family who will be attending. Everyone else is getting the hell out of our city during July 27 - August 12.

Some years ago my, then, secretary did a lovely Fruedian, referring to the olympics as the olimpricks

God forbid it doesn't happen but just one terrorist attake and every one from all over the world will disapear back to their own countries like a greyhound out of a trap and as far as future visitors to the UK go we will have to pay them to come here after the games are over. I am also convinced that the rest of the worlds leaders were glad Brittain won hosting the games because they knew their money would be better spent on their own people, not like the dipstick government we have that just want to look good on the world stage no matter what the cost to our own people.

Use the Olympics to promote Britain for business` What the hell do this government think they are doing after trashing the whole country with austerity cuts trying to pay off the so called deficit when there are millions of people without jobs and many more thousands are going to lose there job next year and homes . Families living in poverty to frightened to switch there heating on. What they are trying to show at the advents about Britain is a big show of lie`s. Its a show for the government pretending this is how Britain is while lining there rich friends pockets. The people of this country have been robbed again.

I can't afford the circus, anyway all the good seats are taken as freebies by the very fat cats.
As to bread,I certainly don't have enough.

"£9 billion." That's obscene. I'd like to someone like MORI conduct a national poll on support for this farce.

Hunt was aptly misnamed by that BBC announcer. He's the one wants to be 'centre of world attention'. For once I agree with Boris Johnson, and Hunt is guilty of vulgar ostentation. Strange, really, because he always looks as though he's sucking a lemon.
06:17 PM on 12/31/2011
It's not just the austerity calls that will be ignored.. they ignore everything we want them to do.. I hate them more and more every day.
05:07 PM on 12/31/2011
Yes, freeby tickets for the fat cats, fatcats making a fortune out of it all, and the cheeky basta.ds want people to VOLUNTEER to work there being marshalls etc., just another rip off by the fat cats. Doesnt this country just make you sick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10:26 PM on 12/31/2011
I'm boycotting the games, I wouldn't go if they paid me. turn off your tv cos I am
10:50 AM on 01/01/2012
I don't suppose all these'marshalls' are going to be security or CRB checked?
04:46 PM on 12/31/2011
For one, I will not be in London for this fiasco, everyone there is a moving target, never mind the terrorists the thieves will be swarming like bees.
The security , even now underestimated, will draw qualified personnel from all over leaving those places unprotected or more like the employment of unscreened staff.
The money spent is unconscionable when there are wso many things that need fixing in the country.
All those free tickets to the high and mighty, special routes cutting off people from even their neighbours.
I cannot understand how we can afford this when the money could be used to9 do simple things, like payfor sufficient hospital cleaners.
Never mind, its only taxmoney, hey we give awaynearly £14M to Brazil, a nation richer than our own!
We do not bother to collect £Bs from some big companies.
06:23 PM on 12/31/2011
There are plenty of cleaners but they are not allowed to use bleach.
06:37 AM on 01/01/2012
I agree, there are far more important things that we need the money for. It's like throwing a party when you haven't paid the electricity bill.
It's not just us, either - just about the entire world is feeling the pinch. Would it have been so terrible for everyone to get together and say, 'Look, we''ll give it a miss this time, eh? Start it up again in 2016 maybe, when things are hopefully a bit easier?'
04:45 PM on 12/31/2011
they really need to try living in the real world

Yes it will bring us money just like the dome did what a waste of money and time ( Pathetic )

Is the 50p tax on the Euro Lottery ticket going to continue after July, with all the money being spent North of Watford ?
03:37 PM on 12/31/2011
He says.. we will be the centre of global attention.. we already are, as the rest of the world can't believe we vote for these clowns to run the country.
03:47 PM on 12/31/2011
hahahahaha - so true
03:32 PM on 12/31/2011
What planet are these clowns on, people dying of cold in this country and these clowns throw OUR money about like there is no tomorrow. Time we grew a backbone and voted a party in to power who will actually care about the people.. politicians..I hate them. Scum.

you mean labour,,,,, ha ha ha ha
04:54 PM on 12/31/2011
No, all three main parties!
11:07 PM on 12/31/2011
Is there such a party. They only join politics with sole intention of making them selfs rich along with ignoring what we the public want them to do for the good of our country and its people. I for one will not hold my breath.
01:32 PM on 01/02/2012
Yes that's their main aim but maybe if the so called big three were thrown out on their butt's it would open a few eyes and maybe, just maybe we would get a party that will listen to us.
03:20 PM on 12/31/2011
How is it when they want to grab the lime light, its the "government money" which has done this and the other. but when it comes to cutting the pensions for the public sector workers, its "tax payers money"

Its all tax payers money, and I for one do not agree with the 9 billion bill. By the time it all finishes and Lord Coe has been paid off, the bill will be nearer 10 billion, approx. 4 times the original estimate.
