Van Driver Crushed To Death By Falling Tree In High Winds

A van driver died today after his vehicle was crushed by an oak tree in high winds, police said.

The man, aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident in Sandhurst Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, at 12.25pm.

His vehicle is believed to have been stationary at the time, Kent Police said.

A male passenger in the vehicle is understood to have escaped unharmed.

The road has been closed amid fears that another tree in the road may topple.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "The driver of the van, who is in his fifties and from Tonbridge, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene".

Paul Harragan, who lives on Sandhurst Road, said emergency services were cutting back the tree, which had "completely crushed" the vehicle. "The van is completely crushed and there's a man with a chainsaw cutting the branches," he said.

"The van is completely squashed over the driver's side".

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.
