Nikon has announced its next-generation DSLR camera - and its bunker-busting price tag.

The flagship Nikon D4 will feature a 16.2-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor and will shoot at 11fps.

The camera can also shoot 1080p HD video at 30fps, stored on a high-capacity XQD card, all while boasting a new benchmark ISO up to 204,800.

The black, functional design is complemented by noise-reduction technology to help your photos say free of distortion.

Available in February, the camera will set UK snappers back £4,799 for the camera base. A full set of lenses and other accessories will set you back at least another few hundred - so you had better have some good ideas for photos beyond the usual moody graffiti shots and family snaps.

"The introduction of the Nikon D4 sets a new benchmark for photography,” said Kentaro Kusakari, product planning manager at Nikon UK.

“We’re proud to be launching a new flagship model that exceeds the capabilities of its world renowned predecessor, the Nikon D3.

“This new camera has been designed for class leading professionals looking to push the limits of photography and improve their workflow. We’re confident that the Nikon D4 will help take them to the next level."

Engadget has all the details including hands-on video and pictures.

I have to compete every summer against guys using equipment like this, I know its not the tool, but the tool holding it, but using a body like this would make my life so much easier. I use a 20D, yes a 20D and the camera doesn't make the image, it just makes the image better. I would love to have something like this, go back and redo all of these photos. With an ISO of 204,800 my low light shots would be amazing.
