David Miliband: Labour Has To Be Humble About Its Mistakes, Proud Of What It Has Achieved

David Miliband has spoken of his "frustration" at Labour being in opposition while a "pretty hard-right" Government is at the helm.

The elder brother of Labour leader Ed Miliband said the party had to be "humble" about its "mistakes", but proud of what it had achieved in power.

His comments - a rare intervention in domestic politics since he lost out on the leadership to his younger brother - came in an interview with Indian newspaper The Hindu.

"I think for everyone in the Labour Party, it feels very frustrating at the moment. Because opposition is a permanent lesson in frustration; you can talk but you can't do anything," he told the newspaper.

"Britain now has quite a radical Government. Some people thought that a coalition Government would be centrist. In fact, this is a pretty hard-right Government in economic terms."

The former foreign secretary said the impact of the Government's policies on unemployment and poverty in his South Shields constituency was "pretty painful", adding: "So the whole Labour Party is frustrated by opposition.

"Equally you can't be in government forever. We had thirteen years."

Miliband did not comment directly on his brother's leadership, which has been under the spotlight over the past week.

But he said Labour, in trying to get back into power, had to challenge the Conservatives in "an ideological and intellectual and political way".

"There's a debate in the Labour Party about how we should understand our record in government, what we should be proud of and what we should apologise for," he said.

Miliband added that it was "very important to be proud of your achievements and humble about your mistakes", while always understanding that politics is about the future.

"So we have a responsibility to understand the fundamental ways in which the world is changing and Britain's place in the world is changing. And make sure we are able to challenge the Conservatives because in the end, it's them who we have to challenge," he added.

"It's a coalition Government but it's the Conservatives who are the real enemy. We have to challenge them in an ideological and intellectual and political way."

Well at least he agrees that Labour made mistakes. Shame the present one in power is too arrogant to believe he is doing any wrong (or the one before him for his party)! But words cannot put what the wrong done by both parties for decades. We need a party who is fair to all without thinking about lining their own coffers first! Like that is going to happen! LOL!

I'm sorry Miliband, New Labour has achieved absolutely zilch except the death of the party.... All Labour Party achievements came from real Labour politicians not the likes of Blair, Brown and brother Ed.
Real Labour politicians must be spinning in their graves watching the respect built up over the years thrown away by the greed and incompetence inflicted on the Labour movement since May 1997.

I hate to say it but Labour are unlikely to get back into power for a very long time. Ed Milliband is a nice enough guy but he is utterly boring and uncharismatic. His performance in the Commons and in the country generally is lamentable and it shows just how far behind the Tories Labour are. I'm afraid Ed Milliband is a liability and will ensure Labour's electoral defeat. That probably suits some of those in the wider Labour movement as they would rather be out of power for another generation than elect a leader who can actually win a General election. Cameron is looking more statesmanlike as time goes by and although they are pursuing some pretty unpleasent policies he (and the Tories) are not suffering in the polls at all. Time for Labour to wake up I think before they are confined to opposition for 20 years. The one positive is that (Hopefully !!) the appalling, disgraceful Liberal Party will sink without trace at the next election. Clegg, Cable et al turn my stomach and I wouldn't vote for them if my life depended on it.

you have A for what you achieved,
and B for what you screwed up

here a start two wars, selling the gold ,immigration from the E U and world wide, over staffing of public jobs, pensions, MPs expences, the collapse for health service dentist, the dome the olympics the massive overpay on wembley stadium, the wholesale giving out of benefits the majority of claims unchecked, same for passports, free housing to immigrants, human rights laws,
legal aid to foreign nationals to fight our goverment, not saying this lot are any better but david the champagne socialist whos never had a job, i can"t really think of how you bettered this country.
You should hang you head in shame for the thousands of british service men and women killed and maimed under you reign let alone any of the others, and sadly the new goverment are doing nothing to solve this either.

What have New Labour achieved?

I assume that this is a reference to the debt mountain which they managed to build in such a short time which will probably end up in the Guiness Book Of Records.

What do New Labour need to apologise for?

Still existing!

I wish this pair of 'Rich' champagne Socialists would just disapear up each others a/hole and let us real people sort out the mess that these prats caused!
04:54 PM on 01/09/2012
well said , they are 2 rich spoilt brats who never worked or wanted for anything, all the family money is wrapped up in tax avoiding schemes.

Their father was a Polish Jew who fled to the UK just before the outbreak of World War 2. During the war he was in the Royal Navy. He then studied his way through college and eventually became a lecturer at the LSE. Their mother was also a student at the LSE.

Their sons both went to state schools and obtained scholarships to attend university.

I can find no reference to them being "rich". Nor can I find any reference to family money being wrapped up in tax avoiding schemes. Please justify your remarks.
