Around 300 Chinese workers who manufacture XBox consoles took to a factory roof and threatened bosses with mass suicide over a dispute about pay, unconfirmed reports have claimed.

The workers were employed at the Foxconn Technology Park in Wuhan in Hubei province. Foxconn is an independent, global manufacturing partner to companies including Apple, Microsoft and Sony.

Microsoft said on Wednesday that it is investigating the incident.

According to unverified reports emerging from anti-government Chinese news websites, about 300 workers took to the roof of the Taiwanese-owned factory on 2 January to protest against their employers.

Those reports have sinced been repeated by websites including Kotaku, but neither Foxconn or Microsoft has yet confirmed the incident took place.

According to the reports the employees had asked bosses for a raise but in response were told to either quit with compensation or keep their jobs at their usual salary.

Most workers apparently decided to leave, but the company did not hand over the money as promised.

According to the China Jasmine Revolution website, the workers were only dissuaded a day later when the mayor of Wuhan talked them out of committing suicide.

Foxconn factories in China have been the scene of several suicides by workers in the past, including 14 in 2010 alone at its Shenzhen plant, after complaints of low pay and poor conditions.

Workers threatening to commit suicide in a country with an overabundance of laborers and no respect for human life. Yeah, good luck with that.

Let me know when it is over, then there will be room for 300 new employees. China knows how to make money. They will sell 300 caskets and a lot of undertakers will be in the $$$$$. Wah, Wah, Wah

I once threatened to commit suicide in a Chinese restaurant in protest about the consistency of my shark fin soup.
The trouble was half an hour later I wanted to threaten to do it again :(

That's in good taste, making fun of a serious situation like worker exploitation.

Thanks Debs. I knew you'd see the funny side love. I'm here all week by the way :)

Foxconn has relatively good working conditions compared to a lot of factories in China, actually. They're just an easy target because of all the media attention they've gotten.

Do you work for the Foxconn home office?
03:11 AM on 01/13/2012
No, they just pay me 50 cents for every positive post I make about them.

Get over yourself.

'X' marks the spot. Figures plummet and they all go home in a box. Obviously an underground movement! All a bit Seiko; know what I mean? They're all going to do it at 'tooth-hurtee', wow, talk about under statement! They'll be splattered all over the media as well.

Funny. Is that what you said when people take their own lives and jump from buildings. Like, say, the Twin Towers?
01:05 PM on 01/13/2012
No - but this hasn't actually happened. I don't know any jokes about the twin towers.

It is surprising where humour can be found; consider Tom and Jerry, hitting each other with frying pans - little kids watch that. Black-comedy is an accepted genre at the cinema and there are loads of jokes about death and dying. For the most part, humour seems to rely on the sudden re-interpretation of the elements in a story or real event. That reworking of contributory factors isn't available to everyone.

Any way, it's just what I thought. Thanks for your reply in a moderate matter.

But we know will improve. But not work for like slaves. This not correct what you say. But hours too long anyway.

Today, I had a choice and I bought American. And from now ON, I am going to buy American every chance I get. Sure, it takes some time to research and find what I need, but most of the time the products are out there. Even if it costs more, I will buy it. Let's start a movement, let's get millions of American consumers to do the same thing every day. We will bring back the economy and jobs to our people even if the republicans and democrats are unwilling. Tired of waiting on the criminals...

My heart goes out to these workers. I have worked in factories for 40 years and know that these corporations could care less, if you dropped dead on the assembly line. I am not talking about just China either. A factory I worked at, had an employee beg countless times for a raise because his family was living in poverty. Refused once again, this employee went home and hung himself. The corporation did not even send flowers to the guys funeral, plus, because he had been on the job under two years, they denied his company sponsored life insurance policy. This is one of the reasons Unions were formed in the first place, and why they are still needed even today. Simply because these corporations just don't care about their employees.
04:55 AM on 02/28/2012
This I like what you say. You know perhaps that union progress more in this days? I support the growth of unions here in the China. Also improve is made in how migrant worker (the China person who come from one China place but work in other China place)is treated..this need to be so. I always am happy with improvement for any of the China workers.
05:54 PM on 01/12/2012
Considering what happened to The Hostess company here with over 1 billion lost revenue along with all the mega union demands, even supplying benefits to non employees. I guess their employees may consider suicide by over eating twinkies or when the Auto industry has another set back. Those employees will threaten to jump from car roofs.

That factory is based right here in Kansas City. The unions three years ago gave concessions to the company to lift it from bankruptcy. They also do not supply benefits to non-employees. How do you make this stuff up?
11:22 PM on 01/12/2012
RemarkingMark Research how much the company pays out in pay and employee benefits, as well as what the company grossed and what profits they lost, their total debt and according to what info I had there are those not associated with the company who receive benefits. Where is their bailout? They must not be big campaign contributors. There will be more workers loosing pay checks.

michaelne14449 That stuff is all unhealthy anyway! However where is their bailout[not big donors I guess]. They will close and more will be out of work.

What a long strange trip it's been
06:05 PM on 01/12/2012
They can't. They are under contract to Foxconn. There's a LOT more to this story that wasn't included. And it isn't just salary. It's living condidtions and working conditions, 24/7.
