A tsunami warning has been issued after a powerful earthquake hit waters off western Indonesia.

The US Geological survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 and struck 260 miles (420 kms) off Aceh province.

It was centred 18 miles (30 kms) beneath the ocean floor.

Arief Akhir, an official with Indonesia's geological agency, said a tsunami warning has been issued.

A giant quake off the country on December 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, half of them in Aceh.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Once again Indonesia is hit by a natural disaster. Difficult to realise how hard people who already suffered are going through the same process of grief again. After what happened in Japan last year, it is yet another example of how small we are in regard to mother nature.

People who have lost their families because of these natural catastrophies are mostly fishermen or farmers, they ignore everything about the massive polluting energies and strategies rich western societies develop everyday to satisfy more materialistic appetites.

As the fantastic solidarity movement that emerged throughout the world to help Japan, I hope there will be an important engagement of the communities to help Indonesia rebuilting its towns and more importantly, signs from international communities that they also feel concerned about Indonesian fishermen's fate.

Indonesia doesn't get 'tsunamis'. Japan gets tsunamis, which means 'harbour wave' because it's their word.
We get tidal waves; other countries use their own expressions.
When Krakatoa exploded it didn't cause a 'Tsunami' (they weren't invented then!), it caused a massive tidal wave for whatever language the people had. The British used 'Tidal Wave'.
Other countries used their own language.
On the television a few years ago, a huge tidal wave swamped Thailand, among other countries. At first it was a 'Great tidal Wave'. Then, on BBC television,a man was allowed to say,'The Japanese have a word for this - Tsunami!' Not strictly correct though. As I wrote, it means harbour wave.
We have our own great language, why can't these idiots remember it instead of wantimg to lose it? It's very old!

I'm sure that the people who have lost family, and/or their livelihoods will be grateful that it was not a tsunami that caused it.

It's about a warning, stupid, not an event.
Unfortunately, you are typical of today's silicon society.
You missed the point completely.
Our language is being subtley changed; but you will never see that.

Indonesia is a hot line for trouble from nature with all this fault line beneath? World should prepare to help this country, Yes in Africa most small countries are suffering because of no rain and Somalia suffering beyond limit where world have failed to help millions of people. After all this hunger, it is madness world leaders are selling arms to Somalian government. Only sick mind would give arms to kill those people who have no food to eat? It is nothing more then reducing population? Yes God have his own plan when he decides to reduce Lucifer worshippers.

Remember over 90 percent of Americans have never travelled abroad. They have no idea about the rest of the world. To me thats pure ignorance, especially when they interfere in so many parts of the world. Many will remember the "white house hopeful" who had no idea where Libya was, totally farcical.I hope in this story though muslim countries have their hands in their pockets to help out Indonesia ,instead of the aid constantly coming from kaffirs

Most news on the Huff in the US is inundated with the GOP presidential hopefuls and their charades, so coverage on anything outside of that topic goes missing.

One would think the earth had stood still, which it did not!

Do you really need to bring your pathetic politics into a natural disaster. (Oh I forgot- American politics is a natural disaster)
