VICE:

US Congressman and poor-toupee-color-chooser Lamar Smith is the guy who authored the Stop Online Piracy Act. SOPA, as I'm sure you know, is the shady bill that will introduce way harsher penalties for companies and individuals caught violating copyright laws online (including making the unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a crime which you could actually go to jail for).

It would be interesting to see how much $$$ the Motion Picture Association paid into Smith's campaign fund.

If they put all the money that will be at their desposal in a pot and spend it on prevention instead of the ongoing battle to prosicute the offenders then the battle eventualy becomes stale and they win as it becomes more and more difficult to obtain any image, music or video from the internet by unautherised persons.

They seem to be able to stop you from getting into the governments computers and downloading stuff but not from downloading a song?

Seems to me like the chase they wish to start to prosicute is a way to capitalise and make megga bucks instead of finding a way to prevent it and make nothing!

They realise they are missing out on revenue

So is this really just a new TAX from the illegal downloads market?

So how much will it cost the tax payer is the question?

It will cost thousands to track down and prosicute an individual (If the clever one's can actualy be found) thousands spent and the offender may not have actualy made much from it (if at all) and the original potographer hasn't lost much (sould have used a watermark)

I feel the gain outweighs the loss and it will be at the tax payers expense.

The answer is to find a way to prevent these images from being able to be downloaded without a password provided by the original artist or something along those lines.
Stop it before it happens and becomes a problem instead of locking the gate after the horse has bolted.

Prevention is key not expensive after thought!

Come on boffins sort it out!

OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE RESPONSE TO
Stop the E-PARASITE Act. and 1 other petition
Combating Online Piracy while Protecting an Open and Innovative Internet

Thanks for taking the time to sign this petition. Both your words and actions illustrate the importance of maintaining an open and democratic Internet.

Right now, Congress is debating a few pieces of legislation concerning the very real issue of online piracy, including the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) and the Online Protection and Digital ENforcement Act (OPEN). We want to take this opportunity to tell you what the Administration will support—and what we will not support. Any effective legislation should reflect a wide range of stakeholders, including everyone from content creators to the engineers that build and maintain the infrastructure of the Internet.
