Nurseries across England are to receive advice on dealing with fussy eaters, with new guidelines suggesting curry should be served up to toddlers.

The advice, released on Monday by the School Food Trust charity, also covered portion sizes and how to involve children in food and cooking activities, meaning childcare providers will have a nationally-recognised source of information for the first time vere.

According to the charity, which compiled the voluntary guidelines, some young children are given food which is more appropriate for older children and adults. This can result in them eating too much salt and sugar, and not enough energy, carbohydrates and essential minerals.

The charity's nutritionist Patricia Mucavele said pilot schemes to introduce the guidance are already in place with five local authorities, and they will spread throughout the year.

"This is just the beginning, and we hope that as many providers as possible will use these guidelines to help children get a healthy start in life."

Other dishes on the menu include:

  • Fish pie with sweet potato topping

  • Lamb or chickpea curry with brown rice, naan bread and tomato and coriander salad

  • Lentil lasagne

  • Mixed bean and root vegetable stew with apricot and herb couscous

  • Homemade tuna fishcakes

The guidelines were developed by the charity due to concern about the poor standard of meals in private nurseries, with some reportedly spending as little as 25p per meal.

Children's Minister Sarah Teather supported the scheme, saying healthy eating is "at the heart of helping every child get the best start in life".

"Nurseries play a vital role in getting children from all backgrounds to develop good eating habits - but many lack the expert knowledge of what is the best food to serve," she continued.

Persian stews are also full of vegetables and very inexpensive to make. Gormeh sabzi can be made with fresh spinach, fenugreek, parsley, green onions, chicken stock, lemon and aloo (dried lime). You can buy the Gormeh sabzi mix in a can. You can serve it with brown rice or even quinoa. I add tofu and kidney beans. You could serve pomegranate seeds for dessert. I would borrow someone's cheap oriental rug and have the kids bring their own pillow to set the stage and download Persian songs. It doesn't take much to have fun just a little planning and effort. These moments tweak childrens sensitivities. They'll ask years later, "Do you remember when we......?"
You'll obviously have to say truthfully, "No, I don't remember" and you'll have to re-live the experience vicariously through them.

This is the most important period of a child's appetite. Providing a wide range of foods when their palates are being formed. Introducing ethnic foods is a wonderful introduction to new cultures and so fun to introduce to children. The lightbulbs of their minds are switched on. Food is a wonderful learning tool because it hits all the senses. I've introduced children to a lot of different food experiences and its fun to see them overcome their prejudices. Getting children to playact roles is one sure way to get children involved. Such as sushi chef, waitress, cashier, busboy. These roles endear them to the food they are learning about. Simple changes to a California roll can be made such as brown rice or soy wrapper for children allergic to or sensitive to seaweed. It helps to also have a few enthusiastic Asian eaters in the mix who "sell" it to the others. Stay the course and never ever give up!
