M5 Crash Gloucestershire: Five People Injured In Car Pile-Up

Car Crash

First Posted: 18/01/12 09:04 Updated: 18/01/12 09:04   PA

At least five people have been injured in a crash between a lorry and several cars on the M5.

The accident happened between junctions 10 and 11, between Cheltenham and Gloucester, in Gloucestershire, shortly after 5pm on 17 January.

The emergency services said at least one male driver had suffered life-threatening injuries and will be flown to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol once he is cut free from his car.

Two other motorists are being taken to hospital while two others are being assessed at the scene.

John Oliver, from the Great Western Ambulance Service, said: "We received the first of several 999 calls around 5.15pm reporting road traffic collision on the M5.

"Callers reported a lorry travelling northbound just past junction 11 collided with several cars - at least some of which were travelling southbound.

"The Great Western Ambulance Service currently has five patients on the scene.

"The driver of one of the cars has been seriously injured - believed to be life-threatening - and is trapped in his vehicle.

"Once freed, he will be flown to Frenchay by police helicopters, accompanied by a GWAS critical care team.

"Two other patients - both male - are being placed on spinal boards and will be taken to hospital.

"A further two patients are being assessed on-scene by a doctor and we hope to be able to discharge them without going to hospital."

The GWAS has four ambulance crews at the scene, as well as a critical care team, a hazardous area response team and paramedics in rapid-response vehicles.

Gloucestershire Police said the accident affected both north-bound and south-bound carriageways and involved seven vehicles - a silver VW Passat, a blue MG, a grey Ford Escort, a silver Audi A4, a silver Ford Mondeo and a lorry.

"A white Renault van, that is thought to have been involved in the incident, was located on the exit slip road of the M5 northbound at junction nine and a man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving," a force spokeswoman said.

"The driver of one of the vehicles, a man, has been airlifted to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol with serious injuries.

"A female passenger in the same vehicle has been taken to Cheltenham General Hospital.

"The M5 is currently closed in both directions between junction 10 and 11 and is likely to remain closed for several hours.

"Gloucestershire Police would like to thank the public for their assistance during the incident and for drivers' patience whilst the emergency services work at the scene."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident to come forward.

Only last month a lorry driver from Bristol was killed in a crash on the same stretch of road.
The accident, which involved two cars and three lorries, happened on the night of December 13.

Later, the ambulance service said the most severely injured motorist had suffered a serious head injury, broken femur and possible internal injuries. His condition remains life-threatening.

The female passenger in the car suffered ankle and neck injuries and she was taken to Cheltenham General Hospital by ambulance.

The male driver of another car involved in the accident was taken to Cheltenham General Hospital for precautionary checks.

Two other men - a lorry driver and the driver of a third car - were both assessed and cleared by a doctor at the scene.

"Completely separate from the incident itself, we also assessed and treated two other patients near the scene, who were occupants of cars stuck in traffic," Mr Oliver said.

"One was a male suffering a suspected diabetic episode and the other was a man complaining of chest pains."

Later, Gloucestershire Police said the man who was being held in custody was 55 and from Gloucester.

The best thing to do is get all the long distance freight on the trains, much greener and use small vehicles to transport the goods locally from the stations.
Of course we would need investment by HMG to make it work as the train companies guard their money tighter than a ducks posterior and want the tax payer to fund their business.

Trouble is drivers do not concentrate on driving they always seem to be doing something else as well and the driving takes second place. How many leave enough space and look as far in front as they can see not just the car in front. If you are too close then all you can see is the vehicle you are following.
Most times when I am in the outside lane I find myself covering the brake and starting to brake well before the two or three cars in front of me as I have already seen the queue slowing down about ten cars in front.
No way am I perfect even after 42 years of driving but I have yet to have a serious collision so I must be doing something right.
Its alright driving like a loony but what happens when you come up against another one.

Ah! the persistent braker in the outside lane! The major cause of all hold ups and the traffic backing up when there is no reason. Keep your distance and only brake when you need to. If you have a lack of confidence in the OVERTAKING lane do not go there!

the people on here kicking up the most stink are the worst offenders everybody should take more care stop blaming the trucks they have had more training than most car drivers will ever have and now they also have to have 35hrs training to keep there licence every 5 years without trucks you would starve and freeze to death because they keep the country going even delivering your new cars so you can go out and be prats in

Max speed limit of 60mph and have it rigorously enforced.

3 year ban for driving whilst on the phone; 3 year ban for driving too closely ~ remember the chevrons that show you how far apart to be? 2 year ban for exceeding the speed limit.
18:15 on 18/01/2012
And a life ban for cutting in between vehicles and reducing their maintaining a safe distance between each other.
19:03 on 18/01/2012
And taken out and shot in front of their family for hogging the middle lane!
16:25 on 18/01/2012
More knobs in suites no doubt,GET out my way im late for the meeting, its about time office bods were made to insure company cars using there own name.
16:31 on 18/01/2012
agreed also plod needs to look at this a little harder
15:28 on 18/01/2012
I think there are plans to increase the motorway speed limit from 70 to 80 mph.

It would have helped because he would have been somewhere else.

Motorways encourge fast driving but the speed limits in many cases are ignored. I think vans and lorries should be confined to the inner lane and vehicles travelling under 50mph whilst the middle lane for overtaking and up to 70mph. Unpopular suggestions,I know, but how many accidents would be alleviated and lives saved?
14:44 on 18/01/2012
So a big lorry with a heavy load driving at 40MPH will have a line of lighter vans and lorries behind it with drivers going out of their minds. So what's the outside lane for?
15:04 on 18/01/2012
I agree totally with your response to the comment from N. Mitchison.

For anyone with half a brain to suggest that lorries and vans should only be allowed in the inside lane and not be allowed to overtake is verging on complete insanity.

Perhaps a trip as a passenger in a lorry or being forced to drive hundreds of thousands of miles a year would give this guy a different outlook and respect for lorry drivers.

I am not a lorry driver but I do have the utmost respect for them on the road, clearly unlike several people in these posts. Shame on them !!
15:34 on 18/01/2012
cantabria: The outside lane has the same function as the middle lane which is overtaking and nothing else. The middle lane is certainly not there so that some lumbering vehicle can continue at 1 mph more than the lorry in the inside lane, thereby blocking the entire lane. That style of driving effectively reduces our motorways to single-lane carriageways which is highly dangerous. In my view priority should be given to the faster moving vehicles; cars and motorbikes in fact, and the rest should stay out of their way. When they don't we have incidents like the one featured here, so I agree with Norman Mitchison in that lorries and vans should be confined to the inside lane.
15:37 on 18/01/2012
What a funny man you are Norman, lol..
14:22 on 18/01/2012
its funny that whenever theres a major crash on motorways involving several cars, theres always a white van of some sort and always a stupid lorry. its about time lorries are banned from over taking.
14:37 on 18/01/2012
You are obviously perfect. Why can't we all be like you including the van drivers and lorry drivers. This world is so unfair that such a few have all the talent and common sense over others. You are so privileged.

All these lorry drivers, some of whom have been driving for decades and they still haven't got it right yet in the way that you clearly have.
14:45 on 18/01/2012
LOL :-)
18:54 on 18/01/2012
I agree in principle but it is clearly evident that alot of the time a lorry or large van have been involved in these major pile ups... whether they are always the ones at fault is debateable but never the less ........
14:56 on 18/01/2012
Why is the lorry driver stupid? grow up davidHHH, there are many stupid driver's on the road so don't put all the blame on lorry driver's. If you read the new's properly you will notice that it was a CAR driver that has been arrested for suspected Dangerous driving.
15:09 on 18/01/2012
it was a VAN driver actually.........
15:36 on 18/01/2012
chris758: since when was ''a white Renault VAN'' a car???
14:16 on 18/01/2012
so what we going to blame this time instead of poor driving standards perhaps it was a flying pig that distracted them or a hwadsless horseman lets hope they get it right this time and remove the licences of the driversd causing it through bloodsy stupidity
19:28 on 18/01/2012
Blame the pensioners and the disabled, it seems to work for everything else.

Speed and distance are so important and yet in the UK particularly the safety zone will be filled instantly it is made. Years ago now I was heading north on the M5/6 (just after the junction) in the 3 lane semi fast parking zone when a prat shot out of the fast last across my bows by paint thickness. He had seen the Jam Sandwich forcing it's way through -- to my gob smacking amazement I was waved over to the hard shoulder (no mean feat in those conditions from the middle lane) where I was promptly accused of tailgating the very guy who had pulled over so dangerously. My three passengers protested to the point where letters to the Chief Constable were proposed and they eventually thought better of it. The West Midlands fuzz took a hit in the status stakes that day! Thank goodness that these days such traffic happens only a few days in the year when the population of Paris flees south.
19:33 on 18/01/2012
I don't know how many times I have left a gap on the outside lane (2 second rule) only to have it filled by cars entering from the slip road and cutting across all three lanes only to have them dabbing their brakes and gesturing that I am too close. I always hope that we are leaving at the same junction or services so that I can vent my anger by scratching a message in their paintwork.
13:37 on 18/01/2012
I occasionally use motorways. It is frightening to watch cars zooming past at well over 100 miles x hour and all driving nearly on each other bonnets, no motorway police cars in sight and no speed cameras. On the continent there are frequent police patrols on motorways and the dish out instant fines as well as point on the driving licences . Another issue is that on the continent one need to have all car documents and the driving licence when travelling in a car, In addition summary of insurance details must be visible on the windscreen like the road tax disk. Car checks are carried out more frequently by the police to ensure cars are roadworthy. These more rogorous procedures will not stop accidents from happening but it will ensure that rougue drivers are kept in check. Penalties are more severe ispecifically for disqualified drivers who are caught.
So we need to wake up in the UK!
14:33 on 18/01/2012
The UK is a waste of space now and I much prefer to drive in Europe and the USA
14:40 on 18/01/2012
WHEN ARE YOU MOVING THERE??
14:43 on 18/01/2012
same for you too. pck your stuff and pee off to the continent.
14:38 on 18/01/2012
Which countries are you refering to? I have never had to display insurance details whilst driving on the continent. Wouldn't make any difference here, because those that don't drive with insurance would just falsify it anyway.
15:02 on 18/01/2012
you do not need to dispay a summary of the insurance certificate if you drive a uk registered car.if and when you go to Italy as an example have a good look at the windscreen of italian registered cars and you will see the ceertificate in question
17:20 on 18/01/2012
In Spain it is an offence not to carry your documents readily available in the vehicle, that includes insurance. You must also carry a spare pair of spectacles, if you normally wear them . It is printed on your driving licence. When you renew your driving licence every five years, you must undergo a medical by a Government Registered Doctor. It still does not stop pratts who always know best!!!
13:32 on 18/01/2012
It's not the speed on the motorway, be that 70 mph or 80mph that is a problem. The biggest danger are drivers who insist on sitting in the middle lane, travelling at 50mph and refuse to get into the nearside lane even when that lane is empty.

This selfish action causes situations with a back-up of traffic restricted then to 2 lanes because the prat in front has no respect for other users of the motorway. Even trucks are having to slow down for these people because they can't pass on the inside lane. The truck driver moves to the middle lane, flashes his headlights in shear frustration and then he is regarded as the bad guy and the trouble maker in the eyes of 'the prat'.

I am always having to go from the inside lane, to the middle lane behind these prats then to the outside lane to overtake. Once past I then return to the inside lane, look in my mirror some time later and yes you know the deal, the prat is still in the middle lane, none the wiser and away in a world of his/her own. Just pathetic.

These are the people that the Police should be pulling over and not someone who is doing a handful of miles over what, in my opinion, is an outdated speed limit and totally at odds with the the modern capabilities of car braking, handling and dare I say most drivers as well.

Ron, Glasgow.
13:38 on 18/01/2012
Totally agree. Caused by lack of training and understanding. All drivers should have to undergo motorway instruction before being allowd to use them.
14:01 on 18/01/2012
It used to be customary to have motorway tuitions prior to taking a test, but we are now all so versed that i would guess it has gone out of fashion. that is progress in reverse
19:04 on 18/01/2012
Yeah i agree , i drove on non motorway roads for a good 6 months to gain experience after passing my test. As my driving instructor said to me and i believe to be so true .... He said i can teach you how to drive a car and pass a test but its after you are on your own when you will learn how to really drive.... very wise words!
14:34 on 18/01/2012
Totally agree with you Ron
13:28 on 18/01/2012
I got overtaken by a moron in a 30 limit, I was doing 30!! He almost hit another car.
12:56 on 18/01/2012
99.9% of all accidents are caused by "Driver error" because they fail to adjust thier driving according to the conditions around them eg: slow down/allow more space

I was an instructor for 13yrs and you could teach all the apsects of safe driving but the moment someone passed thier test (Young blokes in particular) all that went out of the window

Accidents like this will never stop until each and every driver adopts the attitude that THEY are personally responcible for not only thier ownr safety but also that of every other road user around them
18:57 on 18/01/2012
well said ,basic rules.
