David Cameron Outlines 'Moral Capitalism' And Need To Curb City Excesses

Cameron Moral Capitalism

David Cameron set out his vision for "moral capitalism" in a major speech on the economy on Thursday.

He suggested transparency to help stem the worst excesses in business as well measures that will make it easier for co-operatives to be created.

The prime minister announced legislation affecting the 12 million co-op users in the UK would be streamlined into a new co-operatives bill.

"We won’t build a better economy by turning our back on the free market, we’ll do it by making sure that the market is fair as well as free," he said.

"While of course there is a role for government, for regulation and intervention, the real solution is more enterprise, competition and innovation."

The address builds on ideas Cameron set out three years ago in a speech to the world economic forum in Davos, Switzerland, when he said governments must "stand up to business when the things that people value are at risk".

It comes as against a backdrop of continued unrest over city regulation and bonuses.

On Wednesday Wall Street banking giant Goldman Sachs, which employs around 5,300 staff in the UK, announced a bill for pay and bonuses in 2011 of £7.95bn, despite posting a 47% drop in earnings for the last year.

The revelation came as The City of London Corporation won its High Court bid to evict anti-capitalist protesters from outside St Paul's Cathedral.

Lawyers for Occupy London argued the case raised an issue of "extreme public importance" but Mr Justice Lindblom granted orders for possession and injunctions against the group.

Instilling an ethical streak in big business has become a key battleground for all three main parties in Westminster.
Ed Miliband used his Labour Party conference speech last year to pledge he would tackle "predatory" companies that made unfair excessive profits.

On Wednesday Miliband said he would judge Cameron on "deeds" not his speeches.

"I welcome the fact that other leaders are coming onto the ground that I set out in my Labour Party conference speech about the need to tackle predatory capitalism."

Earlier this week Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg unveiled his plans to create a "John Lewis economy" by radically increasing employee share ownership, and research by Forrester showed that the co-operative bank was most trusted by European consumers.

The deputy prime minister said that employee-owned firms tended to perform better, which would help boost growth, and insisted the move would also help usher in a new era of "responsible" capitalism.

Fellow Lib Dem Vince Cable is attempting to crack down on fat-cat salaries, urging bank bosses to show restraint in upcoming pay deals.

we live in a country where welfare has over taken jobs where low pay is the mainstay of every corporation and the have less have even less then the haves,
we will witness a population migration out of London, simply because their is no protection from increasing rent rises from landlords, add a benefit cap on rent then London will empty, the low paid cant afford to travel in because the increase n fares, will exclude them , the unemployed have gradually been replaced with workers form eastern Europe who can live on minimum pay they don't complain and they will work all hours, because labour opened the doors to mass immigration from the Eu, the chances of finding a well paid job after leaving university are over, unless your studying sciences or medicine your better off leaving for another country notably Canada or Australia
Here the chances are slim of employment,, we have hit the bankers with moans but the banks role in the affair of economic meltdown can be laid at the door of the EU and our own governments
policy of allowing the market to be unregulated, and un watched for decades ,

Before we get to see moderation from these grotesque and immoral grabbers, we need to see full and absolute declarations of the financial interests and dealings of each and every person in our bureaucratic chain, whether elected, hereditary or employed. Also we need to know of any societies or 'clubs' that such people belong to which are either known to be undermining, or thought to be such. Naturally, such people should only be allowed to take positions of leadership if demonstrating that their beliefs and actions are totally in accordance with the wishes of the electorate and establishment.
Once such corruption is eliminated, then action against excessive pay deals etc etc will be easily mastered and managed!!

Dont be fooled by Dodgy Dave promise of increased regulations. The conservative parties main idealogy is 'de-regulations'.

If Dave believes in increased regulation, why has he got a Minister for Light Regulations.

Quote: "If Dave believes in increased regulation, why has he got a Minister for Light Regulations."

There will be areas that are over regulated and some under regulated, like pay-day loans (the Wongas of this world). So it is entirely sensible to review regulation to ensure that it is still appropriate or whether change is needed. Doing nothing is an abdication of responsibility.

How does Dodgy Dave keep a straight face when he speaks of Moral Capitalism and rioters. This from the guy whose family's wealth comes from imoral capitalism that is the financial sector and the his history of vandalising local businesses with his rich friends.

Has he ever heard the phrase ; POT KETTLE BLACK.

We have seen all this before, from the days of Ted Heath and the "unacceptable face of capitalism" within my own memory. Nothing has changed despite successive Conservative and Labour governments, leading to the question "who really runs Britain?"

In a truly free market there would be no immigration controls. The idea that competition, innovation and hard work create wealth is a lie sold to us by the people who own the land.

They don't work hard;

They are not innovative;

And they do not enjoy competition, - in fact they do everything in their power to stifle it.

The last thing they want to do is compete on level terms with the hoi-polloi, just as the British hoi-polloi don't wan't to have to compete with the Indian hoi-polloi, who generally earn 50 times less than them.

The free market is an illusion. All markets are regulated - government is there to decide how much. Market forces are a power to be harnessed, and that's as much as we need to appreciate about them.

Laying flowers and offerings at the shrine to the god of the free market is as stupid as sacrificing a virgin every day to make sure the sun comes up tomorrow.

True Capitalism is a function of Free Enterprise , where innovation , hard work, and competition create wealth which is in turn reinvested in new ventures.

What we have now is a corrupt system of monopolies , cartels, and oligopolies where greed and price-fixing is the business model , and bribing of politicians and concentration and control of major media is the grease that keeps it running .

Now joining 'jumbo shrimp', 'army intelligence' and 'compassionate conservatism', Cameron's 'moral capitalism' is the newest phrase to land in the Paradox Box.

He will not regulate. He will not impose. Meaningless talk. I watched it. Many words. Nothing said.

There is no such thing as Socially Responsible Capitalism where no instituion can do harm to the public good. If there was, someone would have been locked up by now for starting the credit crunch.
