Elite Olympic Security Forces Stage Tests On River Thames

It was only a dry run - but if we see pictures like these in the summer it will mean something has gone seriously wrong at the London Olympics, as security forces train for a host of potential threats to the Games

Around 44 marine police officers in rigid inflatables and fast response boats were joined by 94 military personnel and a Lynx Navy helicopter.

The boats sped up the Thames, with London's iconic Canary Wharf in the background. One boasted a large, mounted gun.

Reminiscent of a scene from a Bond film, men in black balaclavas carrying heavy weapons could be seen bouncing up the capital's waterway, flanked by a helicopter, speeding past pleasure cruises.

The elite British security teams took to the Thames as part of a massive security rehearsal to foil fictitious terror disaster at the Olympics.

Scotland Yard and the Royal Marines joined forces for a string of "familiarisation exercises" to avoid catastrophe in London this summer.

The Metropolitan Police's Marine Policing Unit and army members gave a rare glimpse of Britain's top secret security plan as they took to the water.

Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison, head of the force's security operation for the Games, said a Mumbai-style terror attack was one of the scenarios elite teams of police and military were preparing for.

The drills "[were] designed to make sure that everyone has the same level of knowledge about how the river operates and how our tactics work together," police said.

Allison said: "All of our planning is designed to mitigate against potential risks during the summer of 2012, and this is an example of where we will be using specialist military capability to support us.

"This exercise is not in response to any specific threat, but is part of our planning to pre-deploy certain specialist assets to bolster our operation.

"This will be a summer like no other in London. The Thames runs through the very heart of our capital and will be a popular place for people who want to be part of the Olympic spirit. This is all part of our planning to ensure this summer's events take place safely and securely."

Crime and security minister James Brokenshire said: "This exercise forms part of the comprehensive testing and exercise programme that is crucial in securing the Games.

"We are leaving nothing to chance to ensure we deliver a safe and secure Games that London, the UK and the world can enjoy."

Typhoon jets and HMS Ocean, the largest ship in the Royal Navy's fleet, will eventually be deployed to protect the London 2012 Games along with up to 13,500 military personnel.

The Government has stressed that operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere would not be affected by the security plan costing hundreds of millions of pounds.

Typhoon jets will be stationed temporarily at RAF Northolt, and Puma and Lynx helicopters will operate from HMS Ocean.

This is all right as long as they who would want to do things to the games and this country are reading from the same book but some how I just don`t think they would be, they may be playing football but with they rules and their balls still was a nice show for the press.

we appear to be inviting unwanted guests here, i hope we are not throwing down the gauntlet for muslim terrorists to try and have a go if you think your big enough, it's not vip's that will get hurt, it's the common people.

Just another thought, when were so many armed forces last on the streets of London?
Are HMG expecting a civil rebellion?

earlsspg: Not so much HMG as MI5 because, since the 1990s, MI5 having no spying to do with the Cold War ended, took over the Counter Terrorism Division of the Metropolitan Police Force. Spies trust NOBODY, and now that they are running counter-terrorist measures in this country they have turned that same mentality on the whole population, therefore nobody can be trusted and are potential terrorists. The result is that they have turned the whole population paranoid about terrorism. If you don't believe me, or think I am a fool or whatever, have a look at the Met's own website and read what they themselves say about their work against terrorism. Have a look at what they list as criteria for spotting a terrorist and then ask yourself how many people would not be included in their profile. Do you use transport, have a mobile, a computer, a passport, a suitcase? YOU could be a terrorist! Given that the police now have powers to arrest and detain anybody using those laws it should be clear that everybody today is en prise under anti-terrorist legislation; that means me, you, everybody. A previous head of counter-terrorism with the Met resigned over his unease at this attitude brought in from MI5 and his subsequent disagreements with the then head of MI5.

It seems that you are suggesting that they are.

All these troops can be expended whilst others are dying in conflicts that are no concern of ours, unless you are an investor in oil and minerals.
All this money spent when troops in the field are still short of kit?
Something is wrong here.

It seems that the serving military will be taking to the Streets of London, there many ex service men sleeping rough there as well.
Given the cuts, there will be a few more, thank you HMG! :O(

Seems a few £M more of taxpayers money being used for this event, just for what?
00:07 on 20/01/2012
Wondering where the money is ending up as well.
19:41 on 20/01/2012
It would be nice if the sponsors had to pay for everything related to this event, then it would be carried out on a school playing field, if there any left.

Stratford, the principal Olympic venue is around 1 1/2 miles from the Thames.

I suggest they disembark at Greenwich, take the tube from North Greenwich (Jubilee Line), northbound to Stratford. Do not accept any offer of transport from a Muslim. Please note: London Underground is a strictly smoke-free zone.

Alternatively, take the tube from Embankment (District line), eastbound to Mile End, which connects to the Central line, and continue northbound to Stratford. From there, a taxi could used if pressed for time. Don't use an unlicensed cab; they are illegal. Please note it is illegal to travel without a valid ticket.

This is great for our confidence, an elite task force to prevent any terrorist attack. sadly, and far too late, the terrorists are already here, one step ahead of the game....
