A fresh study into the connection between diabetes drug Metformin and cancer risks has discovered that the exposure of this drug may help prevent against cancer.
Researchers at McGill University and the Université de Montréal unearthed the link between the diabetes drug and cancer prevention, which has been looked into by other studies in the past.
Previous studies concluded that the Metformin drug, commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes, helps prevent cancer by lowering glucose levels in the blood therefore restricting the tumours voracious appetite for glucose, which helps it develop.
Scientists believe that this inadvertently blocks cancer developing or spreading.
However, although the new study acknowledges this theory, they made another discovery: Metformin reduces cell mutation rates and protects from DNA cell damage that can lead to cancer.
“It is remarkable that metformin, an inexpensive, off-patent, safe and widely used drug, has several biological actions that may result in reduced cancer risk,” says Dr Michael Pollack from the study.
“Surprisingly, we found that Metformin protected DNA from mutations.”
Explaining the discovery, Pollack explains that cells burn nutrients to produce energy and it’s the burning process that produces a “cellular exhaust” that causes damage to the DNA inside the cells, which can trigger cancer.
The Metformin drug acts like a cellular “exhaust filter” by reducing the reactive oxygen being created by the burning process of the cells.
“The drug seems to selectively prevent (the cellular exhaust) production ... such as those found in cells with oncogenic mutations,” says Gerardo Ferbeyre, who co-authored the study, published in the Cancer Prevention Research Journal.
Breakthrough Test Could Predict Heart Attacks And Strokes
Scientists have discovered five new genes that cause heart attacks and strokes and hope these findings will enable them to pinpoint when the attacks will strike.
The researchers, from <a href="http://www.qmul.ac.uk/" target="_hplink">Queen Mary University</a> of London, identified five generic variants that trigger heart attacks and strokes after investigating blood pressure measurements of 25,000 participants. The aim of the study was to look into the role that genes play in hypertension and high blood pressure.

Genetic Breakthrough Raises Hope For Breast Cancer Sufferers
The genetic code of the most common form of hereditary breast cancer has been mapped for the first time, offering hope for diagnosis and treatment of the disease in the future.
Researchers say they have "fully sequenced" the DNA of two breast cancers caused by a faulty BRCA1 gene, which is responsible for aggressive and highly drug-resistant tumours.

Peanut Allergies - Have Scientists Finally Found A Cure?
Scientists from the <a href="http://www.northwestern.edu/" target="_hplink">Northwestern University</a> in Chicago have come one step closer to developing a potential cure for peanut allergies, by creating an immune system tolerant to peanuts. The researchers found that they can switch off potentially deadly peanut allergy attacks by tricking the immune system into tolerating nut proteins, and not seeing them as a threat to the body.

Boiling Breast Cancer Tumours Kills Them In Minutes, Discover Experts
A new treatment for breast cancer has been discovered after scientists found that breast tumours can be killed in minutes - by boiling them. Cancer is the most dreaded of all diseases, and ever since a "war on cancer" was declared 40 years ago, massive research has made progress, although the battle is far from won.
Any benefit derived from a pharma drug will be greatly offset by the damage it does to other parts of the body. Most ALL drugs either block or inhibit a natural bodily function. Do not take these poisons and allow your body to function as designed. To do that it must have proper nutrition. FOOD HEALS! It is the only thing that heals, with the exception of positive emotional states.
Pharmaceuticals are dangerous and ineffective, period. The science is very, very clear on this. Don't read ghost written reports by drug company shills. Almost all health info you'll read or hear on tv and newspapers/magazines is propaganda written by drug companies. Lies! Lies! More lies!
Mother Nature is your best friend when it comes to prevention and healing.
Conk: Any benefit derived from a pharma drug will be greatly
The other hypothesis to be drawn, although it will not, is that once an individual is diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, and they don't crawl in a hole and weep til their death day, they wake up and say, hmmm how did I get in this situation, could it be food? could it be the immense amount of time I spend on my computer? could it be me? If the answer to these questions is YES they take action. Those actions: diet and exercise, then in themselves reduce the amount of cancer risk by reducing the glucose in their system, in addition to making their systems much more able to handle the surges when they do, for instance sit on the couch eating a bag of potato chips (beenn there done that myself!). The correlation between these actions and reduced cancer risk should be studied as well. For instance, IF those taking the medication and NOT making life style changes have reduced cancer rates, then yee ha we have found a magic bullet. Until then, I remain as always skeptical of the "magic pill"
Suzanne_Mcnabb_Tobin: The other hypothesis to be drawn, although it will not,
People, one incident does not prove a theory. The articfle did NOT say metformin prevented 100% of all cancers and does not cure cancer. Those who read alternative medicine sources are familiar with Metformin and it's ability to reduce and/or improve DNA damage from free radical attack and other sources. It has been shown to slow the loss of, and even restore, "telomeres". Telomeres are end caps on chromosomes in DNA that get lost each time a DNA strand splits and two strands are regenerated. Without the telomers, the 'information' in the chromosome can be lost. Neighboring chromosomes can even be 'spliced' together without an intervening telomer, completely changing the genetic impact. Since most cancers are caused by damaged or mutated DNA, anything that reduces DNA and chromosonal damage, can reduce incidents of cancer.
The best defense against cancer is to take a chelated calcium like calcium citrate or calcium bisglycinate and Vitamin D3 to help maintain blood pH level. pH is an indication of the acidity or basicity of a liquid. The blood should be just slightly basic. Dr. Otto Warburg won a Nobel prize for proving that cancer could not live in a basic environment. It is so important to keep your blood pH level correct. If the blood becomes too acidic, hemoglobin loses its ability to carry oxygen from the lungs to the cells. So, if you keep your blood, lymphatic, and intracellular liquids slightly basic, at a pH of 7.1-7.3, then cancer cannot survive.

Pharmaceutical companies will claim ANYTHING....especially these days.
Why don't they just say keeping your blood sugars down helps stave off cancer? Maybe because so many people that don't have glucose problems and are not diabetic get cancer too.
Instead of devising another glucose meter that talks or one in a different color or one that is "downloadable".....HOW ABOUT A CURE Big Parma?????? Or is it just too profitable keeping everyone on your outrageously expensive glucose strips, prescription of the month or filling up landfills with glucose meters......
It's been over 90 years since another country had the intelligence and skills to discover insulin as a treatment. Great Britain was the first country to make it available to her citizens.
The U.S. is NOT on the cutting edge or even the back 9 in helping diabetics. And for the money of soooo many "walks" and other fund raising for breast cancer, I'd say there must be a lot of board members living the life of Reilly instead of cancer research getting the funding it needs.

Every day I get phone call or are approach to donate on this cause or that disease...so it makes me feel like I am responsible...on the other hand, I pay taxes, my taxes go to state schools, state schools finance research and any valuable which comes out of that get big pharma and starts to profit of it. Lets big pharma finance everything...don't ask me for extra money, I already gave enough in my taxes. Whoever profits should pay into int. Never in Europe I was ask to donate even though research is happening there...but basically everything is financed by state and few private institutions and they are not asking money from average citizens and then go ahead and make huge profit for themselves.

My husband has been on Metformin for years but still got cancer of the oesophagus. He had a successful operation to cure it but then developed secondary cancer of a lymph node. So it's not all true about Metformin.

so sorry about your husband, and I believe his problems may have been "linked" to the pharma itself...
but then, I think big pharma is the cause for much of sicknesses we are confronting today.
