Third Baby Dies In Belfast Royal Hospital Bug Outbreak, Northern Ireland

A third baby has died after an outbreak of a deadly infection in a hospital in Northern Ireland.

The latest death was confirmed as staff at Belfast's Royal Hospital launched an investigation to trace the killer bug at Northern Ireland's biggest maternity unit, which will undergo a deep clean.

Northern Ireland health minister Edwin Poots said expectant mothers are likely to be transferred to other hospitals in the Irish Republic and Britain.

The deaths are believed to be linked to the pseudomonas infection, which can cause severe breathing and other problems.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is bacteria found in soil, water, plants and animals, and is particularly harmful to those who are already ill, including the elderly with reduced immune systems.

Admissions have been restricted to all but the most seriously ill babies who cannot be treated elsewhere, but staff believe the infection has not spread to other areas of the Royal Victoria Hospital site.

The first two babies to die were born prematurely.

Dr Richard Wright, associate medical director at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust said: "We are engaged in a fairly major investigation to identify the cause of the infection."

The pattern now is that nothing happens until it's too late.
Right across the board, nobody gives a damn.
It's a case of bolting to stable door after the horse has gone.
Greed and selfishness rule.
How many victims are there from this culture?
I had a bad experience in the a following a cancer operation
and discharged myself before I snuffed it in hospital.
Lack of funding is a basic problem plus a general don't give a damn attitude.
People, these days, react after the event.

Get matrons back in control of the wards like they did in the 70's..no nonsense with "out with" services that belong to a company wanting profits NOT service... Florence nightingale would be spinning in her grave!!!!

Very true hun, we never had a problem when the midwifes ran the cleaning, its only since they sold the jobs off to private company's who dont give a toss :)

This is absolutely shameful. Even in many 3rd world countries they do not have to worry about this. When will the government realise that they must stop contracting out the cleaning services, fire a few penpushers and employ matrons again who will take responsibility for the cleanliness of the wards. We also must stop hotbedding, the practice of filling a bed the moment the previous occupant gets out of it. There must be proper time to sterilise the bed frame, mattress and bedside locker. There was a case where a woman went to the bathroom for 20 minutes and when she returned to her bed there was a new occupant in it! No way had that bed been sterilised. I have observed cleaning in hospitals and to say it is haphazard would be kind. I have watched people lazily pushing a filthy brush round trying to look busy, and not in the least bit interested in doing their job effectively and well. Also, isn't it time we began to use scrubs for nurses and doc's rather than the uniforms they use now? They should be laundered in the hospital too to ensure sterilisation. Slack, dirty practices will always lead to the heartbreaking incidents which are rising daily. People are precious and new born babies doubly so. Is our government so callous that it does not care enough to address this problem? Can we start a campaign to make them? Does anyone care enough to do so?

I hope that everything goes right for you. I know what ever is said to try to take the worry out of the situation, but think how many babies are born every day with no problems, I pray yours is one of them.
